A tight little novella!

After reading maximalists like Pynchon and David Foster Wallace it was a sheer delight to read Ellis beautifully wrought world building. How did he manage to create distinct engaging characters in a world that felt so deeply realized? He does this so economically, not a wasted word. Other artists would have taken dozens pages to get inside your head so thoroughly that you believe in their narrative universe, but not Ellis... Like Derek Raymond before him, he struck the existential vein that lies at heart of great noir fiction...

Rusted Blood is, on one level, a fairly basic noir-ish procedural. What elevates it to an intriguing level is the setting: a rusted out, broken down "city of the future," where buildings stand up and walk around, "red star" rounds give your gun dangerous effects, and mechanical men are failed projects from the past. Ellis's writing verges on the poetic in places, evoking a sense of palpable despair: we should have thought through the future we wanted before we built it, and now we're stuck with it.
This is the first of what might be five stories set in this world, according to Ellis. I hope he finds the time -- and the interest from the public -- to write those five, and maybe more.
