Inspiration for my son

I first learned of this book while reading Michael John Carley's "Asperger's From the Inside Out". I was researching Asperger's Syndrome after my seven year old son was diagnosed.
When I came across Gilles Trehin in Michael's book, I immediately jumped online to do some research on him.
You see, this is exactly what my son has been doing and I was so excited to find someone else on this planet who is as obsessed with drawing imaginary cities and related statistics as my son is.
I ordered the book right away, and when my son received it, he was amazed to learn that there is someone else just like him.
I am so thankful that such books, and information on Autism is so richly documented and so easily accessible today.
We both love this beautifully illustrated book. It's another positive step forward in our personal quest to understand Aspergers Syndrome.

a true genius

Gilles Trehin is an incredibly talented young man. His innate understanding of perspective demonstrates his genius. His depth of imagination is expressed through the creation of an imaginary city - Urville which he depicts in highly detailed pencil drawings : skyscrapers, public spaces, museums, hospitals -- all elements of the urban landscape. I'm afraid this special book is not going to get the attention it deserves.

DAVID POYER's sea career included service in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arctic, Caribbean, and Pacific. Tipping Point is the fifteenth in his widely popular series featuring Captain Dan Lenson. A great first half of a book

If you've read a Poyer novel before you know what to expect: complex characters, often forced into morally challenging situations, with crisp dialog and beautiful descriptions of even the mundane details of life aboard a warship. Throw in the traditional elements of a bad apple amongst the crew, the hint of improper relationships at various points on the chain of command, and sweet, sweet engineering casualties, then season with a spicy mix of political and strategic influences that are outside CAPT Lenson's pay grade. Sound good? You bet. The problem is that the book ends abruptly. I won't detail the plot for fear of giving away spoilers, but let's just say there's a reason this book is subtitled "The First Salvo." There are several fascinating story arcs, almost none of which are resolved here. Poyer has often been compared to Tom Clancy; for what it's worth, I think Poyer is a far superior writer-- but Clancy knew how to tell an *entire* story in one of his big doorstops, while Poyer is evidently saving some material for "Tipping Point 2: Electric Boogaloo" or whatever the next book is titled. I deducted one star for making me wait at least another year to find out what happens next.

Poyer is slipping

No naval officer would be command selected for a CGN that would shoot down a missile launched authorized by the National Command Authority. It is a preposterous concept. They do full psych evals, test and vett them completely. The other ridiculous subplot is Lt Singh's behavior. A Lt massaging her commanding officer in CIC is never going to happen. Interrupting your CO at mast is never going to happen. Then there his reaction to his wife saying she doesnt know about them and needs to discuss it. The whole sheepishness when they are together was nauseating. Grow a pair and kick her to the curb. Lastly, he was awarded the CMH, but that isn't listed during the Congressional Hearing...sloppy.

This Dan Lenson novel of the modern Navy is probably the most technical he has yet written. Yet, Poyer manages his human story is a way few other writers have been able to do. He protagonist, Captain Lenson is highly capable and very successful, but full of self-down and personal flaws, bringing to mind C.S. Forester's Hornblower. This novel is the first in a series and I anxiously await the second installment.

One of the most compelling books, I've ever read

Heather Stroud has spent ten years researching Middle Eastern politics. Her novel, although a work of fiction, depicts the harsh and often brutal reality of the complexities of life in modern day Palestine. The central character, Fida, is caught up in the 7th of July bombing and is trapped in the wreckage of a tube train on the London Underground. Her mother has been killed in the blast. Fida emerges from a coma, to find her fiance has abandoned her because he cannot bear to see her face so badly scarred. When she's well enough, she embarks on a journey to her late father's homeland of Palestine to seek answers as to what gave rise to Islamic hatred of the west. What follows is an epic journey, graphically told, of what it's really like to endure at gunpoint, having your home bulldozed to the ground, your land taken by Messianic Settlers and being forced to live in a refugee camp, with nightly raids by Israeli soldiers, who can shoot and kill you and your children with impunity. I found the book shocking, heartbreaking and deeply disturbing, but I feel it's a story that desperatly needs to be told, because the oppressive treatment of the Palestinian people, by the Israeli Government, while the west continues to look the other way and do nothing, is the whole crux of why Islamic militants hate us all so much and why their terrorism flourishes. But this is far more than a damning indictment of Israeli and western policies. There's a lot of beauty in here too. Heather Stroud depicts the sweeping Palestinian landscape with a painter's eye for detail. She clearly has a passion for the country and its people.
As Fida gets to know the warm hearted people who befriend her and take her into their homes, she finds family she never knew she had. She also finds love, but to say more would be to spoil this amazing story. Though not always enjoyable reading, I found it totally compelling. Despite a few minor editing issues, I feel it's more than worthy of five stars. I would give it ten if I could. For anyone who doubts the validity of this book's content, take a look at these links.
