Sunshine was Adorable

Would someone tell me why it's taken me so long to pick up this series? Please? Okay, I know I have no one but myself to blame but seriously, I can't believe it's taken me this long to jump on the Dark Hunter train. Never fear though. I'm totally making up for lost time.

Talon was a mystery until now. He kept himself totally hidden and his swamp home, complete with alligators wasn't the only thing that kept people away. He kept his distance from everyone on purpose, but that all changed when he met Sunshine. There was just something about her he couldn't resist, but he had no choice.

Sunshine was a character that I loved from the moment I met her. She was a free spirit and she was as drawn to Talon as he was to her. She also didn't understand it any more than he did. Little by little she began to discover exactly who Talon was and why he needed to keep his distance. There were forces working against their avoidance of each other though. Through a lot of Night Embrace it was hard to tell which side readers should choose. That's just one of the reasons why this one was so hard to put down. There weren't only bad guys, there were impostors and people who you knew you couldn't trust but found yourself sympathizing with them anyway. It was more than a little intense.

One of the best parts for me was the very unique way that Sherrilyn Kenyon came up with to resolve some issues in Night Embrace. I also loved the twists and turns, and the humor in this book was adorable. Most of it was provided by Sunshine but she wasn't the only character that gave readers a few chuckles. The witty banter and relationships that exist between these characters is perfect. Yes, there were also some tears, but with the existence that some of these characters have endured, that's to be expected. Regardless of what they've been through, the characters definitely make this book and I'm looking forward to seeing much more of all of them.

A lot happened in Night Embrace, as if the romance and the avoidance between Talon and Sunshine weren't enough. This was a pivotal book for a lot of reasons. Lots of characters were introduced. A few mysteries were solved (a lot more were introduced) and some interesting back stories were given. There were even some appearances by previous characters that added to the intrigue. There's definitely a lot in store for everyone.

Dance with the Devil is next up and it features Zarek who was introduced in Night Embrace. Since the series worlds overlap, it's not only the 4th book in the Dark-Hunter series but it's also considered the 1st book in the Were-Hunter series. Is there any wonder there are so many books in this series? I'm not complaining though. I'm just starting out and I'm planning on loving every minute of it.

I really enjoy the Dark Hunter Series. I have read them all. The early ones are her best by far. Just the right mix of romance, mystery and paranormal fantasy. The only issue is that the further you read in the series the more violent the books become. I definitely recommend the book, I just caution people that when you get to books such as Acheron and Styxx, the violence and torture can become too much to read. I had a very hard time finishing the last book she wrote (Styxx) because of how graphic it was. Don't let these comments stop you from reading her books. Ms. Kenyon truly knows how to create a world all of her own and make you believe it really exists. Her fantasy world contains so many substories, plot twists, character relationships that I don't know how she keeps them all straight, but everything she writes flows smoothly from one book to the next. You become so familar with characters that you feel as if these people exist in you life. She is an amazing writer.

Great Female Lead

This is the second novel I've read in the dark hunter series and fell in love more so with the female lead this time. I did have to take off a point for the use of "aye caramba" yes, I understand the writer wanted to get across the charisma and charm of this Latina character but being Latina myself a modern Latina woman would most likely use this expression as a complete joke. This slang term went out of style when Bart Simpson made it famous. However since I am not from New Orleans maybe the Latin culture there uses that term. It still annoyed me to no end and I'm glad she stopped saying it after the first chapters. I read these books for the mythology and background of the characters not necessarily for the love scenes although there are a lot of those in here. If you want some steamy love scenes I suggest Richille Mead's succubus series. These books are entertaining page turners and even though you can predict the SPOILER ALERT --------- happy ending the journey there is still worth any supernatural romance fan's time.

About the Author

Michael Barnett is University Professor of International Affairs and Political Science at the George Washington University. Among his recent books are Eyewitness to a Genocide: The United Nations and Rwanda (Cornell University Press, 2002); Rules for the World: International Organizations and World Politics (with Martha Finnemore, Cornell University Press, 2004); Power in Global Governance (co-edited with Raymond Duvall, Cambridge University Press, 2004); Humanitarianism in Question: Politics, Power, Ethics (co-edited with Thomas G. Weiss, Cornell University Press, 2008); and In a World of Hurt: Humanitarianism Through the Ages (Cornell University Press, 2011).

Thomas G. Weiss is Presidential Professor of Political Science at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York and Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, where he is Co-director of the United Nations Intellectual History Project. He was President of the International Studies Association (2009-2010) and Chair of the Academic Council on the UN System (2006-2009); editor of Global Governance; Research Director of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty; Research Professor at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies; Executive Director of the Academic Council on the UN System and of the International Peace Academy; a member of the UN secretariat; and a consultant to several public and private agencies. A Few Errors, But ESSENTIAL!

If you're using the McQuarrie textbook, let me first say I'm very sorry to hear that. However, one thing you can do to make your life a little better is to get a hold of this solutions manual. I would say having this manual is a MUST if you want to do anywhere near decent in a p-chem class using the McQuarrie book.
The solutions manual has worked solutions to all problems - not just even or just odd problems. Another nice feature is that it also restates the problem in the solutions manual. This may not sound like big deal, but when you see the the size of the McQuarrie textbook (thicker than a phone book!) you get tired of lugging the book and solutions manual around. So if you have a quick homework assignment to turn in and want to take the easy way out ;) you can just use the solutions manual only and not even bring the textbook to wherever you're going.

A Lifesaver With Some Issues

I purchased this to help me understand the approaches that should be taken when solving my P. Chem homework. The guide can be very helpful, but still leaves a lot to be desired on some problems. There are often many steps skipped that the author assumes you can figure out yourself and on a few problems, the solutions are flat out wrong. I have been stuck for an hour or two trying to figure out how they get their answers, when they are completely wrong, so if you find yourself in a similar situation, it might be best to seek help elsewhere. Overall, I found this book to be very helpful and just wish that it had been better edited.

Lots of quotes but little substance or direction on how to implement those great one liners

Meh it was okay. Sure there are a bunch of great one liners in the book that feel awesome but there is no 'how' presented at all. After reading this you're still left wondering how to do any of what the author says is good.

Also the author never really backs up his thoughts. The examples provided come across like stories where a friend of a friend did something awesome that you saw on the Internet.

In short they feel right but not like they hold up to intense scrutiny.

Finally there are a few items that seem to be contradictory. The author says write a mission statement then says keep it secret so the competition doesn't f ind out but also tell employees so they know.

It can't be secret if you tell employees and really that's what you should be doing. Fearing what the competitors will do because of your mission means you're not looking at your mission for direction anymore you're looking at your competition which means you're following them.

Bad idea.

I don't think this book is really worth your time unless you just like quotes with no action to back them up.

THE Marketing Book

As Harvey Mackay notes on the cover "The one book on marketing I'd have if I could have just one. A CLASSIC." This books changes the way we think about marketing: "It begins with an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of services - their invisibility and intangibility - and of the unique nature of service prospects and users - their fear, their limited time, their sometimes illogical ways of making decisions, and their most important drives and needs". Harry then goes on to discuss a number of fundamental topics: surveying and research, planning, positioning and focus, pricing, branding, communicating and selling, nurturing and keeping clients etc.

Below are some excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

a) "Your opportunities for growth often lie outside the confines of your current industry description." - This can be reworded to apply to one's personal career

b) "In most professional services, you are not selling expertise - because your expertise is assumed, and because your prospect cannot intelligently evaluate your expertise anyway. Instead, you are selling a relationship. And in most cases, that is where you need the most work."

c) "First, accept the limitations of planning...Second, don't value planning for its result: the plan...Third, don't plan your future. Plan your people."

d) "Positioning (Al Ries and Jack Trout) says: 1) You must position yourself in your prospect's mind. 2) Your position should be singular: one simple message. 3) Your position must set you apart from your competitors. 4) You must sacrifice. You cannot be all things to all people; you must focus on one thing."

e) "To succeed spectacularly in a service business, you must get all your ducks in a row. Marketing is just one duck. But it is one very big duck."

f) "...And for marketing purposes - for the purpose of attracting and keeping business - a service is only what prospects and clients perceive it to be. So "get better reality": Improve your service quality. But never forget that the prospect and client must perceive that quality."

g) "Services are human. Their successes depend on the relationships of people...But you can spot some patterns in people. The more you can see the patterns and understand people, the more you will succeed - and this book as written with the hope that it will help you do just that."

h) "Nothing beats experience, of course, but reading books about others' experiences comes in a competent second. The risk in learning only from personal experience is that too often, we draw conclusions from too little data - we learn too much from too little. We also tend to credit our company's successes to everything that went into them...And so we keep repeating things that hurt our business."

One of the best features of the book is the way its written and structured. Each area is covered through small stories featuring numerous real-life examples. This makes the book very practical and enjoyable to read. All in all, a great book on Marketing and one that is recommended for anyone. We are all in some aspect a marketer of services.
