This book is an excellent reference, provides an understandable language and structure which helps not only the corporate savvy understand the organizational theories, but also good enough for post grad students and professors as well.

A must for those seeking to sustain change

Organizational Capability provides a good explaination of all the peices required to achieve, change, and sustain an organization's competencies. The book really focuses on competency and not capability. This makes the title a misnomer. However it is a worthwhile read for anyone contemplating or leading broad scale change.
The book is definately not for people from Human Resources as between the lines there are some fairly cogent criticisms of traditional HR Departments and their operations.
The only drawbacks to the book are its week testimonials. Frequent references to Apple Computer, GE and others appear weak and less than anecdotal. A few strong case studies would have raised the value of the book dramatically. While this shouldn't keep you from reading it, it does cause you to wade through "fluff" from time to time.

Not a very useful book for the complete perspective

This book focusses on the "human" side of building organizational capabilities. It is a pretty good treatise of how HR and individual development can be used to achieve competetive advantage. The model for competitive advantage given in the book makes interesting reading. But the biggest drawback of the book is the lack of illustrative examples. There are hardly any useful cases. In addition there could have been some focus on value chain activites and how organizational capability responds to that. The book also doesnot focus at all on some of key components of capability like technology, time etc. There is also no clear model/ process given which shows the transition of capabilities to competencies. The emphasis of the book also seems to be how to build organizational capabilty - there are really no clues provided about how strategy should be shaped by capablity.

For a lawyer, naive view of how justice system works.

The story itself is above average, and the author's writing skills are also above average.

What is disconcerting are the reviews which state that the author, because of his legal background, has written a realistic novel. That is far from the truth.

First, the district attorney's office does not investigate crimes. That is done through the police or sheriffs office which have an investigative division comprised of detectives in conjunction with the medical examiner and the forensics team.

Secondly, a emergency room physician would not admit an adolescent patient to the peds unit, he or she would have to call in a pediatrician with admitting previleges to do that.

And that is just in the first couple chapters. I could go on and on.

If you're looking for a good story well written, this book fits that bill, just do be fooled into thinking that the author has presented a realistic view of anything.

That was an amazing read and Randy Gage's mindset is mind blowing

I don't give 5 stars lightly. Yet we have to weigh up the reason for such a review. The content in this book covers every possible angle of where MLM came from to where it's heading. The insights and mindset of the author, clearly depict a firm understanding of the industry and the vision of where it's heading. This is one hell of a read and will give the newest Representative in any company. A range of tools to go out and build "New Era" style.

Dave Clearly gives credit to a variety of inspirations in forming this book, one being "Risky is the New Safe". That was an amazing read and Randy Gage's mindset is mind blowing. I put this book in exactly the same playing field, for anyone who has read that book. New Era is an excellent read and highly recommend it!

This book couldn't have been released at a better time. With the current momentum in the industry and the shifting of peoples mindsets, the NEW ERA is here! I found this book to be really the complete package, industry trends and backing, steps to actually apply for real world application and the mindset required to do so. Was great to be able to pick up a book that was written by someone still in the trenches and not just someone who's cashing in on success they got a decade ago. It's time for GEN Y to step up and do what Arnie did to bodybuilding and completely reshape the image of the industry, Dave is leading the charge with the first of I hope many books leading us into the Golden/New Era of network marketing!

A RIPPING GOOD YARN!

This is another of the 14 Allan Quatermain tales from the pen of that great adventure fantasist, H. Rider Haggard. This novel is a direct continuation of "Allan and the Holy Flower," and it does help to have read the previous book. Also referenced are other Quatermain novels such as "Marie," "Child of Storm" and "Allan's Wife," and while a knowledge of these earlier books will make for a richer experience, "Ivory Child" can certainly be read on its own. In this one, Quatermain goes on a quest to find his buddy's kidnapped wife (in that respect, it is similar to "Holy Flower"), but also gets involved in a lost tribe's civil war. Thrown into the mix are a gigantic and evil elephant god, a monster snake guardian (the possible inspiration for all those snake gods in Robert E. Howard's Conan tales), several great battle scenes, psychic visions, drug use, a hailstorm, Egyptology, a shooting competition, a sandstorm, etc. Haggard throws quite a bit into this one to ensure a good time. And for fans of Hans, Quatermain's heroic and amusing Hottentot sidekick, this one provides quite a little tearjerker ending. It's all wonderfully pulpy and quite amusing; a ripping good yarn, as they used to say. So seek this one out on Amazon it'll reward your efforts!

Haggard does it again!

H. Rider Haggard was a great writer of African adventure stories, and The Ivory Child is no exception. This is another adventure to rescue a fair damsel in distress from the clutches of a tribe in Africa. In that regard it is much like Allan and the Holy Flower. If you are a fan of H. Rider Haggard you will want to read this book!

A good reference of endocrinology and endocrine diseases

This is for medically and science trained persons. It isn't an undergraduate textbook on endocrinology. There is a short but thorough introduction to endocrinology then chapters on diseases of the various endocrine systems. A very good reference text.

I Wish THIS was the First Book I Read on Lucid Dreaming

This is a great, concise book about having lucid dreams that I highly recommend to anyone who's interested in the subject. I've been lucid dreaming for about a year and I wish I had started reading this even before Stephen LeBarge's book, which is considered "the bible" on the topic.

Jamie takes a complicated method and turns it into an easy-to-understand set of steps that anyone with a small commitment to practice should be able to master in time.

If you really want to have lucid dreams and want to know the most direct strategy, get this book. And at this price, it's a steal.

Undone by Poor Organization and Editing

I've read a number of books, watched videos, et cetera regarding how to induce lucid dreams. I think that this book has a lot of helpful information, but the information is greatly disadvantaged by Mr. Alexander's poor organization and inadequate editing (i.e., typos and sentences that should be part of other sentences rather on their own). There are many times where I wonder if the author imagines that one has read one of his other books or has certain prior knowledge because there are many statements that require greater elaboration if encountered by the novice. I imagine that if I were sitting in front of the author and listening to him discuss his lucid dreaming experiences it would be a very engaging conversation and, literally transcribed, would read very much like this book. But a book requires more structure and reflection on how to craft that structure, and I don't think the author succeeds in this. The book has the feel of jumping from topic to topic but randomly so. Again, however, I think there's value in this book. The author seems knowledgeable and sincere, and the price isn't going to break the bank. Thus, the reason for the 3-star rating.

Novel approach but needs reorganization

The author offers his approach to lucid dream which is innovative and genuine. He states that at the beginning of the book and delivers as promised.

The book however is difficult to follow; you find allot of good ideas but it is missing that chapter where he says let me put it all together and give you a step by step approach to laying down and sliding into a lucid dream.

Although the book advocates meditation but the author doesn't use standard meditation language which makes it hard to follow. Again the authors puts a disclaimer in the book about his lack of formal meditation knowledge.

He presents an important idea here in which he describes the difference between meditation as meditation and also as means of inducing a lucid dream, although doesn't appear to have reached maturation but he does allot better than most writers on the topic. He describes the experience but doesn't analyze it.

Is it worth buying?
My answer is yes.

Did I benefit from reading it?
Definitely, it gave me seeds for some insights into the topic.

I wish the author will just re-write the book with a chapter about putting it together and other chapters with more organization. When that happens it will be great.

Probably the Best First Book for the Serious Beginning Investor

This is a great first book for the diligent investor. By diligent, I mean a person that actually wants to do the footwork involved with learning how to invest on his or her own and wants to be able to speak the language of the stock market. For the person who is not willing, or simply not interested, in putting in all the work involved in learning how to invest, there are other options out there that may be better, such as financial advisors (if you want the hand-holding and/or don't mind spending more on commissions for the advice) and ETFs (exchange traded funds, which if picked right simply move in tandem with the market). However, even the passive investor could learn a lot from reading or even just skimming through this book.

Kelly begins at square 1 by describing what the stock market even is, and how it functions. He discusses very basic things, such as the difference between a full-service and a self-service broker, and the way that stocks get listed on the exchanges in the first place. His tone and style are welcomed, as he neither presumes that you know anything prior to reading, nor is he paternalistic or presuming that you are incompetent.

Unique to many books, Kelly sums up the philosophy of some of the tried and true "master" investors. His list includes Ben Graham, Phil Fisher, Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, Will O'Neill, and Bill Miller. By examining multiple investors in the way he does, Kelly truly shows that there is more than one way to successfully invest in the stock market. Graham is the model value investor, focusing on stocks that are undervalued. Phil Fisher is a growth investor, focusing on superior companies that he expects will keep growing. Warren Buffett is a combination of Graham and Fisher, and focuses on buying high-quality companies, among other things. Peter Lynch categorizes companies into different types of stocks and emphasizes fundamental analysis by really checking out the company. Will O'Neill is the epitome of a growth investor and focuses on momentum with his CANSLIM method. And lastly, Bill Miller is a value investor that focuses on contrarian positions, among other things. Kelly's tidbits of interview with Bill Miller are a welcome addition to this edition of the book, mostly because it is difficult to find very much material with Bill Miller's thoughts (the other 5 "masters" have all written their own books). It was a mild disappointment to me that Seth Klarman was not included in the "masters" list, with his focus on absolute return rather than relative return. But all things considered, Kelly presents a fairly comprehensive list of 6 as a base, shows the areas where they agree, and ultimately encourages the reader to learn in their own way from this.

Perhaps most importantly, Kelly goes through the basics of fundamental analysis, which is the way that most of the masters go about analyzing stocks. These included things such as Price to Earnings ratio, Price to Book ratio, Price to Sales ratio, Market Cap, Dividends, Current Ratio, and a few others. He walks the reader through the basics of the income statement, the balance sheet, and the cash flow statement. In going through them, he rightly points out that different people place different emphasis on them and the way that they determine whether to buy a stock. He also points out that fundamental analysis is the way that investors (rather than day traders) evaluate stocks. Kelly also takes note of technical analysis (what day traders typically use), and points out that some people believe the market can be timed with prediction charts, while also not making any conclusion as to whether he thinks that is possible or not.

Kelly gives the reader advice for how to conduct his or her own research when contemplating what stock to buy. This includes gathering information from various websites (such as Yahoo! Finance, Google Finance, fund newsletters, etc.), publications (WSJ, Barron's, IBD, etc.), ratings companies (ValueLine, Morningstar, the S&P, etc.) and the companies themselves. Further, he goes through the steps that the reader should consider regarding when to think about selling the stock, which includes both good reasons and purely emotional ones. Kelly employs a method called the "Fearsome Foursome," which I personally use to this day. It more or less forces the reader to know why they bought, what motivated them to hold or sell, and to look back over time and learn from it.

Last, Kelly discusses how the reader should structure his or her own portfolio of stocks. He lays out a method of averaging in both small and mid-cap stocks, which is helpful for readers who want a good starting point. But ultimately, he encourages the reader to learn to do his or her own due diligence.

This book is not radically different from previous editions. So if you already have the 2010 edition, I'm not sure it'd be worth buying this one too unless you are just an overall fan, want a refresher, or want the tidbit of interview with Bill Miller. It is helpful to anyone that wants to learn more about the stock market as a beginning investor. And it is helpful to the intermediate/advanced investor that would like to just brush up on the basics of analyzing stocks and remembering the way that stocks work. But the book is clearly geared towards the person that actually wants to learn about the stock market and how to analyze and value various stocks on their own accord (rather than be told what to buy). Keeping that in mind, I believe it achieves its purpose. Thus, I give it 5 stars.

A must have for anyone interested in stock investing

I started reading Jason Kelly with his 2012 Edition of this book about a year ago. At that time I had no real experience with investing but wanted to learn. This book was a springboard for me into the world of investing and personal wealth management. Jason does an excellent job in this book explaining theories and concepts that can be very difficult in a simplified and easy to understand way. I wish my college finance & accounting professors were as skilled as Jason.

The book begins where it should, at the beginning. It assumes the audience knows nothing about stocks and how the stock market works. It proceeds to discuss the various metrics investors use to analyze companies, how those values are derived, and why they are relevant. Next Jason discussed the great investors in recent history, how they came to be so successful and what you and I can learn from their strategies. Finally, after giving the reader a base of knowledge and background Jason lays out his strategy for success and why it works. Along the way, the book is sprinkled with great resources and references that have been invaluable to me.

Since reading the 2012 Edition of this book I have been a religious reader of Jason's newsletter found at JasonKelly.com and I look forward to it each Sunday morning with my coffee. I cannot wait to get my 2013 Edition in the mail and look forward to the updated material. Finally, I can personally attest to the Jason's strategies as I have had excellent success in the markets over the last year and greatly outperformed the S&P 500.

Excellent book missing one major discussion

I liked:

- Kelly provides a great system for categorizing and evaluating individual stocks.
- He provides the novice with plain explanations for terms and measurements that they may not have been familiar with.
- He provides references for all recommended research and describes how to find them.
- His writing style is easy to follow and occasionally humorous.

I didn't like:
- Kelly does not address taxes on gains. He provides several strategies that require selling shares on frequent occasions and compares return rates without considering the effect of taxes on those gains. Other investment advice I have read recommends not actively trading stock in this fashion because it is highly unlikely that you will keep up with the market due to your losses from taxes, timing errors, and commissions. I would like to see Kelly address this oversight in the next edition.
