About the Author
Nadine Lambert is Professor in the Cognition and Development area in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California Berkeley. A former director of their School Psychology Program, she is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a licensed psychologist. She was honored in 1999 by the American Psychological Association for "distinguished contributions for applications of psychology to education and training."
Jonathan Sandoval is Professor of Education and Interim Director of the Division of Education at the University of California, Davis. He has served as President of the Division of School Psychology, American Psychological Association and represents the Division on the APA Council of Representatives. He has worked extensively in recent years on school crisis prevention and intervention.
Ingrid Hylander is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Linkoping University in Sweden. A licensed psychologist with specialist diplomas in educational psychology and clinical psychology, she has worked extensively, both as a researcher and as a trainer, in the field of consultation.

Pastoral ministry by the book

In the contemporary culture, there exist multitudes of books and ideas regarding pastoral ministry. A significant number of books utilize pragmatic or market driven techniques as a means to carry out ministry. Charles Jefferson's approach to pastoral ministry is rooted and grounded in the word of God as the final authority on these matters. The proceeding review is an outline that I wrote for a class. Chapter 1: The Shepherd Idea in Scripture and History

Historically Bishop, Presbyter, Preacher, Priest, Clergyman, Rector, Parson and Minister were utilized to communicate the role of the Shepherd (7-9). The term Shepherd has withstood the test of time without loosing its meaning and Jesus utilized it for himself (10-11). The language and imagery of Shepherding is throughout the Scripture. It is seen in language as, "feed my lambs, tend my sheep, feed my sheep...tend the flock of God which is among you" (13-14). The Shepherding terminology is minimal within the works of men such as Athanasius, Jerome, Aquinas and Trindentine catechism, the Thirty-nine articles and Westminster Confession (17). When the idea of Shepherding the flock of God was lost, the concept of Priest took over (17-18). The concept of a Shepherd is much deeper then the concept of a Priest or a Preacher (21). A good Shepherd cannot truly serve over a couple hundred people, but will need a staff of Pastors to Shepherd properly a larger congregation (22). Youthful Pastors enjoy the spotlight, at times have low love for people, but should study Shepherding and allow Christ to strengthen them in that area (25-28). The greatest test for a pastor is his actions behind closed doors and if he feeds and tends the sheep entrusted by God (30-31).

Chapter 2: The Shepherd's Work

The concept of a Shepherd is greatly lost and narrowed down to baptisms, funerals, weddings and visiting the sick (33). To understand the concept of Shepherding one should look to the time where the metaphor originated (34). The work of Shepherding in Palestine was not a simplistic task, but diverse and labor intensive (35). There are seven distinct attributes of an Eastern Shepherd, which carry over into ministry. The first is a watchman, who watch's over and warns the flock of danger (36). The second is to guard and protect the sheep since the sheep cannot bite, scratch, kick and run slowly (38). The third is to guard the sheep and lead them, not drive them (40-41). The Shepherd is a physician who points people to Jesus, the healer of wounded hearts (44). He is a savior who reaches out to those who need rescue (46). The sixth primary task of the Shepherd is to feed the sheep (50). A good pastor will be a good Preacher and a good Preacher will pastor his sheep, one cannot exist without the other (53-54). The seventh and final mark is a Shepherd loves the sheep, which will bind all the others together (55-56).

Chapter 3: The Shepherd's Opportunity

Many speak as if the need for a pastor is outgrown and unneeded, but this is far from the truth (57-58). The need for Pastors is high and the modern mans education and degree does not change his need to be Shepherded (59-60). Unfortunately, many Pastors are shortening their pastorate when there is a need for the pastor to do life-on-life with his people (65-67). The idea of efficiency and conservation are infusing many and if churches want to get the most out of the soil, they must get into the lives of their people (76-78). Seeing pastoral ministry as individually focused can even make the smallest parish work great (82).

Chapter 4: The Shepherd's Temptations

There are two primary temptations which Shepherd's are drawn to, which are "the love of gain and the love of power: covetousness and ambition" (85). These temptations can often draw on a pastor's heart, since men who proceed into ministry enter into a "vow of poverty" (86). A Shepherd can receive power and stature, which are priceless to many modern minds (87). The Minister is not wealthy financially, but wealthy rewarded in other regards (87-88). Pastors should not seek the praise of men nor covetousness, which can lead into being careless, a coward, and even selfishness (92-95). The pastor who desires power will turn to force feeding the sheep and pushing his own agenda (103-105). A healthy pastor will look to the humility of Christ and not dominate his people, but feed the sheep with tender passion and care (107-110).

Chapter 5: The Shepherd's Reward

The first and highest earthly reward a man can receive is love, the faithful Shepherd will certainly receive an abundance of love from faithful hearts (113). Shepherding brings about a lasting reminder in the hearts of people, while preaching can often glimmer and be forgotten (114-115). There is great reward and gratification for the Shepherd who is able to pour his life into another (116-117). Rewards exist for being a good pastor and a good Preacher, one should not pit on against the other (121-122). Pastoral work does several things for a Shepherd, such as providing sermon material, providing insight into human nature, increases the form of his sermons, provides originality in preaching, and guards from delusion (123-132). The pastor also receives an ever-increasing spiritual character (135). The last and greatest of all rewards is fellowship with Christ and to receive a "crown of glory" (140).

Phenomenal, challenging, humbling and encouraging.

One of the most helpful books on being a pastor. But be forewarned, this will challenge your socks off. Jefferson pulls no punches, painting a clear picture of the humble Good Shepherd and shattering any illusions we may have about the prestige and power of the pulpit. True shepherding is hard work that should be largely unknown to the world. If you want to truly serve the Lord and his people, read this and pray hard about applying it to your ministry.

very good ,but took 3 books

I enjoyed this series but I wish it would have been just one book,because there are a lot of rocker and bbw books out right now,so I had to go back and skim thru it so i could make sure I had the right charectors and I really liked the story a lot but was glad that by the time I found it 1 and 2 were already out and 3 came out less than a month later,which made me very happy.the first one More than a feeling if frequently free in the erotica section of Amazon.com so that will give you a very good idea of what the story will be like,but I loved it.

This is the third story “More Than A Feeling” I got from the Rockstar Romance Box Set that was offered on Netgalley.com that I know was offered on Amazon also, free or 99 cents at one time so keep your eyes peeled.
Now for the Review:

Wow, can I just say I love the way this author writes. She yes has erotica in it, which by the way is not a lot in this one. Hot I do have to say when she does right it, but if she took it out her books would still be good if they were just longer. More action, description, and emotion in these 35 pages then a lot of authors put in 800. Which I totally loved.
I have to say though her erotic scenes are not bad they do hit the mark but not over the top. This story however was my favorite so far for its descriptive qualities of emotions and action. The way Amy describes what she is feeling when Rick runs out of the van and into the warehouse is just amazing. The unknown twist and turns were excellent too. For 35 pages this author can keep you totally engaged in each of her characters thoughts and emotions.
I know a lot are having a problem with the way they are coming out and the pricing applied so she may want to rethink that but I’m sure if you keep checking you will find that Amazon will either have the books themselves or the box set of the Rockstar Romances either free or for 99 cents again. I paid 99 cents for this third book because I couldn’t wait to see what happened. Now the 4th is due out any day. This book is also a cliffhanger.

$2.99 for 39 pages! please, that's ridiculous! I like a good cliff hanger from the last book, but this price is wrong. And what's book 3 going to be. This is not how to sell books!

If you're going to pick one book to introduce you to ServiceNow, I recommend this one. Tim breaks complex technical topics down into straightforward, easy-to-read language. Although prior JavaScript knowledge is recommended, I am sure developers at all experience levels, system administrators, engagement managers, trainers, and anyone else charged with planning, implementing and maintaining the ServiceNow platform will gain invaluable knowledge by reading this book.

I found this book through Tim's 'SN Pro Tips' site, where his explanation of the 'updateMultiple' function has already allowed me to improve the efficiency of the code I write for clients. I highly recommend any of Tim's writings for anyone looking to gain or build understanding of the ServiceNow platform.

Great ServiceNow Book for Beginners and Experts Alike

If you're looking to improve you skills with ServiceNow, or starting from scratch, Tim Woodruff's new Learning ServiceNow is the book to get started. He starts off with introducing the reader to the interface and moves onto how lists and forms work within the system, UI customization, tasks and workflows, user system and security, and a ton of other subject matter. And for those looking to learn about the ServiceNow API, there's a wealth of information on server and client-side API.

To make navigation easier for new ServiceNow users, plenty of screenshots are provided. The book starts out easy and gets increasingly more complex rather than jumping around like many other authors do. A nice little addition is the Pro Tips chapter where Mr. Woodruff provides some tips and tricks, shortcuts, and other functions that aren't documented in many places.

There are only a couple of good ServiceNow books available. This happens to be one of them. The book is a nice 300+ pages and has a lot of information packed in. This is one I definitely suggest if you want to improve your skills and start making more money.

Strong Romance

I was familiar with Radclyffe by name, but had never read any of her work before now. I was under the impression that she wrote historical fiction, but "Trauma Alert" is without doubt a contemporary romantic drama. And it is very well done - I can see why Radclyffe is so popular and prolific. The author quickly built a realistic setting; she obviously did her research and I felt like I was observing real medical professionals. The main characters are believable, and fully developed. I felt real suspense when they were involved in emergency rescues, or surgeries, and kept me turning the virtual pages to see what would happen next.

I also appreciated that the characters didn't immediately fall into lust-filled gazes, and heightened sexual urges the moment their eyes met. The two women assessed each other, and continued with their professional responsibility like real people do. Not every romance has to start with earth shattering sexual attraction. The two women are polar opposites with their own baggage, and masks protecting who they really are inside. That is not to say that the story has no steam - this is a healthy book, not a novella parading as a novel, so readers have time to see a relationship build.

One of the best things about the writing is the way characters are matter-of-fact about their sexuality. A gay couple is treated as almost ordinary in the story, which is a refreshing break from the angst gay romances usually have. I am not sure if this is typical of F/F, or this author in particular but it was nice. Recommended.

Radclyffe has loads of talents, but this one seemed to be pumped out according to formula. Unfortunately, the characters and plot were too predicatable... in fact we've seen these characters in most of her books, just change the names. The word "skated" was creative and unique the first couple of times, then simply tired and overused by the 8th time. Radclyffe, you can do better.

I swear I've read about characters like these a gazillion times in her previous novels and I'm pretty sure I've read entire passages from this book in her previous books as well.

She's written some really good romances, but not this one.

About the Author
RISE B. AXELROD is director of English composition and McSweeney Professor of Rhetoric and Teaching Excellence at the University of California, Riverside. She has previously been professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino, director of the College Expository Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and assistant director of the Third College Composition Program at the University of California, San Bernardino.

CHARLES R. COOPER is an emeritus professor in the department of literature at the University of California, San Diego, where he served as coordinator of the Third College Composition Program, Dimensions of Culture Program, and Campus Writing Programs. He has also been co-director of the San Diego Writing Project, one of the National Writing Project Centers. He is coeditor, with Lee Odell, of Evaluating Writing and Research on Composing: Points of Departure.

Together, they have coauthored Axelrod and Cooper’s Concise Guide to Writing and, with Allison Warriner, Reading Critically, Writing Well (Bedford/St. Martin’s).

Would entierly recommend this great book!

I needed this book for a class, but was appalled at the price of it. I didn't expect to use it after this quarter so a rental seemed as though it would do just fine. To my surprise even the rental prices were high. There did come a light at the end of my tunnel, and this would be it. I don't have a kindle, so I used the Windows 10 app (which worked perfectly). The writing can seem a bit boring and tedious at times, but it is definitely helpful.

A very fitting conclusion to this delightful series.

It is difficult to say which of the stories in the Outback Heat Series is my favorite. I have enjoyed them all with the third book being the most heart wrenching. However, I had been looking forward to Ethan’s finding his HEA ever since the first book, where he was such an overprotective big brother. The wait is over for in Some Girls Lie by Amy Andrews Ethan gets his due.
It seemed a bit contrived that Ethan and JJ would both need an instant love interest after all the years that they have known each other. But hey, stranger things have happened in real life. Besides it made an incredible story for these two to go from friends to lovers then try to be friends again. The lesson here is not going back especially when you truly love someone.

The plot works in ways not every author could pull off in a believable fashion like it is written here. The characters are authentic, likeable with Ethan’s daughter being adorable. I especially liked that Ethan and JJ don’t just love each other but like each other too. Then there is enough suspense to go with the drama to never get boring. A very fitting conclusion to this delightful series.

Long Term Love

Jemima Jane (JJ) Ericson has loved Ethan Weston her entire life but he is painfully unaware. To him, JJ is a friend. He has been in love with Delia since high school, married to her, divorced, and raising their daughter. Delia never stops causing problems for Ethan and he has sworn off love and marriage because of her.
JJ’s mean when he’s drunk, ex-husband is out of prison and back in Jumpback Springs wanting to get back with JJ. She will never get back with him as he had beaten her up once and never again. Ethan, knowing the trouble JJ’s ex can cause, makes her go and stay at his house until the ex is long gone. The problem is that Ethan and JJ had a passion-filled night and she, nor he, can forget it. He still refuses to even consider that he might love her. Maybe the lights will come on in his heart one day.

I really enjoyed this story. I have loved JJ from the start of the series and wanted to hit Ethan upside his head for not seeing what was in front of him. A great conclusion that ties up the Weston boys and their HEA.

Essential book for all Otolaryngology residents!

This is a fantastic atlas for otolaryngology residents. The line drawings are excellent, and each chapter explains in step-by-step, practical fashion how to do a particular operation, with accompanying comments from multiple subspecialty experts. The operations range from simple (tracheotomy) to the difficult and cutting edge (transaxillary robotic-assisted thyroidectomy), and thus the book is appropriate for residents of all levels. As a senior resident, this book enhanced my understanding as I learned to do neck dissections and other head and neck cancer cases. My only disappointment about this book is that it was not available earlier in my residency. What a great idea. Many thanks to the authors who contributed!

Translation is tricky, especially when the language belongs to a people whose culture is very different from one's own. In this short but enthusiastic book, Moore, a linguist, selects from languages across the world words and phrases that are impossible to translate neatly into English. In many cases, the difficulty arises because our culture simply doesn't share the same experiences as others. For instance, the Cantonese word gagung literally means "bare sticks," but represents the growing group of men who will not be able to find a wife because China's one-child policy, and desire for sons, has reduced the proportion of women. Other untranslatable words are those used for a feeling or situation that English only describes in a roundabout way, such as the indigenous word from Tierra del Fuego, mamihlapinatapei, which connotes "an expressive and meaningful silence," romantic or otherwise. Moore ranges through 10 different groups of languages (ancient and classical, indigenous, Nordic and African among them) and breaks a few into individual tongues. He introduces each with a few entertaining anecdotes and literary quotes to provide context, and his style in the definitions is equally witty and accessible. Strangely, the entries are not alphabetized, and some have meanings that are more familiar than he implies, particularly those found in the section on Sanskrit, which is made up entirely of words that have already entered the English vocabulary, such as guru and mantra. Overall, this book will fascinate anyone who loves linguistic oddities or has ever felt "lost in translation."

Beyond the Phrasebook...the Unintentional Barriers of Language

When I grew up around my Japanese-speaking mother, she often used the phrase "yoko meshi" when she would get particularly frustrated about having to speak English. Only in hindsight do I see that she was using a particularly Japanese expression of linguistic frustration. This is one of the 250-plus words and phrases that language expert Christopher J. Moore has compiled from around the world that do not have a simple translation in English. Yet what they do convey are life experiences with which we Americans can relate.

Words that originate within one culture might as easily have been produced by another at any time. But often one culture may recognize a more immediate need for a word to express an emotion or situation. Consequently there are inconsistencies in how we describe commonalties we have in the human experience. And then there are the cases of words and phrases he introduces that seem specific to their native cultures such as the Czech word, litost, which is a state of torment only experienced by Czechs where they have the sudden sight of their own misery. Bottom line, languages develop in response to a culture's needs and interests. Moore has provided a nice, light tome that clearly expresses our cultural differences through words that truly get lost in translation. It's a great way to get a smidgen of what another culture may be like.

A veritable buffet for logophiles

Believe me, I really wanted to give this book five stars. It is five-star quality in almost every respect. The only reason I didn't is, IMO, it gives unduly short shrift to Spanish. And of the handful or so Spanish words that are included, at least three are characteristic of Spain. It seems to me the author missed a great opportunity to introduce readers to the multifaceted Spanish of Latin America. I for one would have loved to see the word "carteluo" in there, since I have yet to find a satisfactory definition/description anywhere else. Yet try as I might to identify other shortcomings, that is the only criticism I have of this book.

Moore somehow manages to make up for all the deserving words that didn't make it. He shows particular deference to German and French, and I absolutely reveled in his selections from the lengua franca of the Deutschelanders. Surely my auto insurer wouldn't mind being introduced to a geisterfahrer or two. And the mental images conjured up by the words schadenfreude and korinthenkacker are the cure for a bad day. I also enjoyed the introduction, where readers are treated to a glimpse of the Finnish concept of sisu. The selection of Yiddish words is admirable as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if Reader's Digest ever asked to reprint it as a vocab builder.

The smiles, laughter and sheer enjoyment I get from reading this book make me forget I paid for it. I have used it as a reference book, a momentary diversion, and an extended read when I need something lighthearted. I think it nicely complements Ostler's scholarly, but no less entertaining, tome "Empires of the Word". Don't miss that one if you like "In Other Words". And Mr. Moore, if you read this review and ever plan a second edition of this book, may I suggest you consider including the Japanese word "mokusatsu." I've read that the inherent ambiguity in that word might have played a key role in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Enlightening look at language and culture

I just finished reading two books about language: "In Other Words" and a book called "Zounds!" that looked into the origins of interjections.

The author of "Zounds!" gushed about the illustrator of his book, remarking about how much they added. In reality, to me, they looked like hastily drawn cartoons on the same plane as Marmaduke, as far as drawing skill and wit were involved.

Now we have "In Other Words," which is filled with outstanding illustrations, and not a word about them from author Christopher Moore. The illustrations, done in some sort of African or Asian style of which I am unfamiliar, excellently and literally demonstrate some of the stranger phrases described in the book, and truly do add to the experience.

The book itself is an interesting and enlightening read. Moore introduces each chapter (divided by language group), then skillfully describes several untranslatable phrases from each one. Either Moore has an amazing grasp of many different languages, or he did some incredible research, because his writing seems to show a true understanding.

I was also pleased by the physical book itself. The pages are a heavy weight and it's a perfect size. It's not often the size and feel of a book deserve a compliment, but there you have it.

One complaint is that the book ends abruptly, with no final wrap-up or comments by the author. Even more than that, I would have liked to see a list of English words and phrases deemed untranslatable into other languages (Moore mentions the word "cool" at one point; surely there are many others).

But overall, worth reading - if anything, to understand more how diverse the cultures on this world are.
