Outstanding volume of essays

I agree with Doc Dave in his earlier review that this is in many ways a better text than the standard ones out there. It's clearer, more concise, covers the advanced topics quite well considering its brevity, and as the Doc says, it's a fraction of the price of the actual texts.

I used this book to get thru a genetics course many years ago, and it was worth ten times the price I paid for it. It explained the concepts better than either the professor I had, or his T.A., who had graduated from U.C. Berkeley.

The presentation of classical genetics is the best I know of. You can find explanations of the molecular aspects that are probably as good, but for the classical stuff, and the coverage of the mathematical problems that derive from that approach, this is the best book I've ever seen.

I've used Schaum's outlines for a number of difficult subjects over the years, including electrical circuits and electronics, digital electronics and theory, genetics, differential equations, biochemistry, and applied statistics. They continue to be the best aids outside the classroom itself for the more difficult subject areas.

best genetics text available

The Stansfield/Elrod outline remains as comprehensive as any of the intro to genetics textbooks currently available. At about 10-15% the cost of the "standard" texts, this outline delivers the same material with more clarity, and often more accuracy. The concepts of classical genetics, which often prove more challenging for students than molecular aspects, are covered admirably in this book. While those who enjoy colorful illustration and pastel text boxes might be disappointed, the b&w figures in this book are extremely clear, logical and most importantly helpful towards learning the material. No solution manual or supplemental CD-ROM is required. Highly recommended as a reference, or as a text for general genetics classes.

A gem for parents wishing to learn what to expect of their children as they grow

For both the newly becoming and experienced parent alike, this book is a gem for those wishing to learn what to expect of their children as they grow through developmental ages from birth to nine years. Of significant interest to those parents eager to prepare for a more all-rounded Baby-Impact developing baby, rather than simply a feed-and-grow Gymboree or BabyGym physical-activity based development, Schaefer and DiGeronimo provide a treasure box of tips and techniques for building a child's social, emotional interpersonal and cognitive skills. Guiding the reader through each of their twenty chapters using the same five component growth behaviour indicators, clustered into divisions of four age range stages (0-18 mths, 18-36 mths, 36 mths to 6 years, and 6 years to 9 years), the component sections of each age range include emotional health, cognitive development, family and peer relationships, personal growth, and character formation.

Beginning each stage with a brief extract from a `mother's diary', the empathy of the reader is quickly enhanced, as each relates typical observations of a child's natural growth and behavioural demonstrations from a parent's perspective. Schaefer & DiGeronimo would appear to have designed this `guide book' especially for parents who are having their first baby, and are much concerned with discussing infant and child development in the context of outlining normal achievable milestones, only thereafter hinting at ways for individual milestone enhancement and/or interventions with regards the same normative behaviours. For example, tantrums are excellently discussed, explained (and yes, baby tantrums are quite `normal' too !), with practical tips provided for coping/dealing with them, as and when they occur.

With the working parent also in mind, Schaefer & DiGeronimo also aim for this book to be both very functional and simple to explore. In this they surely succeed, and the reviewers believe that most parents will be able to readily acquire the general concepts of (and thus foster appropriate expectations concerning), the formation of normative human infant and child behaviour, whilst also gaining significant parenting advice. For those unable or unwilling to spend many hours reading the text from cover to cover, pay keen attention to the do's and don'ts sections of each chapter (which they label `parenting/consider' and `avoid' respectively). We thoroughly recommend studying the "avoids", (and listing them on your kitchen notice board !) for absolute gems of child-rearing wisdom, at least in the case of the majority of them.

For those with the leisure and luxury to more deeply appreciate the rationales underlaying their advice, Schaefer & DiGeronimo provide further references to the more technical/scientific literature, and occasional additional content concerned with the theoretical and academic basis of their claims. This might require an above average level of knowledge in order to be fully appreciated, though their inclusion of `science to take home' sections will inform adequately for most readers. All told, this book is far more accessible and informative than most previous volumes with similar titles, and will thus suit the parent looking for a well-written and balanced account of what they might expect (and when), from the normally-developing child. One gripe for some readers might be felt in reading the rare occurrence of the occasional Christian-ethic undertone driving some of the moral-development sections, but the discerning parent can simply replace the terminology as appropriate to their own faith(s) - the advice is nonetheless pretty sound. And, if uncomfortable with the seemingly negative advice of a "don't" - remember that an `avoid' can always be changed to offer the same advice in the positive sense as a `do' (by simply avoiding the word "avoid", and remembering the latter exemplar part of the sentence only!). Enjoy, and be honest with yourself and your child(ren), this book is a gem, as can be every developing baby when watched closely over their formative years, with such knowledge to hand as this book provides.

It provides great suggestions on optimizing your child's development & helps parents have a sense of what is normal and what to expect during different phases. I like how it is written in a somewhat "text-book like" style and not anecdotally like many parenting books.

About the Author

Mark Edwards writes psychological thrillers in which scary things happen to ordinary people and is inspired by writers such as Stephen King, Ira Levin, Ruth Rendell and Linwood Barclay.

Mark grew up on the south coast of England and started writing in his twenties, teaming up with Louise Voss to co-write Killing Cupid and Catch Your Death, which topped the UK bestseller chart in 2011.

Great thriller with lots of surprises

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book through NetGalley for an honest review.

I have never read Mark Edwards before and am relatively new to thrillers, having just really begun reading them this past year. I am in awe of this creative ingenious author!

The story begins with happiness and fun. Daniel and Laurel are off to tour Europe before settling down in London and hopefully starting a family. They have so many plans, have carefully put together an itinerary packed with places to see and experience. Everything is going as planned and the couple are on the next leg of their trip, traveling on a train through Romania. They are exhausted but happy and sneak into an unlocked sleeper carriage to get some sleep. It is at this point that their lives are changed forever.

Without giving away the plot let's just say that they see, hear and feel terror as never before when they are forced to leave the train in the middle of a heavily forested area. After their encounter with evil they flee home to London and swear never to speak of it again.

But as the title states, evil has followed them home.

This book is incredible. For me it started out as a thriller, then almost seemed supernatural and ended as a mystery, 3 genres in one book! There are enough twists and turns to make your head spin and your mind reel and your stomach clench, at least that's what happened to me. Just when you think you have a handle on the plot, it changes, then changes again and finally at the ending, well you'll have to read the book.

I have never been so frightened reading a book and yet so riveted that I couldn't stop reading. I have read the many rave reviews about Mr. Edwards books and now I can see why. I know that I will read another of his books, that is after my nerves settle down a bit.

Buy this book, read it, but not in the dark and not alone.

Up All Night

An old woman with hypertension among other issues should certainly know better than to begin reading a thriller/mystery at eight in the evening. Apparently with age wisdom does not always come…

At first I was a little leery. Daniel and Laura spoke and acted more as if they were barely in their twenties instead of professionals in their mid-thirties—the dialogue between them and later with the Romanians, Ion and Alina, seemed a bit off. Even this early in the book, Daniel came across to me as inept, nearly spineless, and if anything bad were to happen—and oh, my, it most certainly will!—then Laura will be the one wearing the Big Girl Panties here. That theme does continue throughout the book, but after the first twenty minutes, I simply didn’t care.

Other reviewers have dished out the plot in enough and sufficient detail so I don’t have to, and I always thought recounting the plot was more characteristic of a book report. I’d rather discuss the effect of the plot, the characterization, the pacing—all the good and necessary stuff that goes into making a novel memorable, or not.

Other than Daniel’s moments of general wussiness, I have nothing to complain about, other than the unrelenting tension, the ruthless aura of suspense, of awfulness, of some enormous but as yet unidentified terror buried in an ancient Romanian forest that barrels along after the first twenty minutes or so like a freight train on steroids. You can’t not read on, you can’t bookmark your Kindle or turn down a page corner and say, “I’ll finish this tomorrow.”

We don’t know what Daniel and Laura saw in the woods until nearly the halfway mark, but we do know that the fear of it followed them to London, infecting them, their lives, and their friends. Even when we do know, and the urge to say “Go tell the police, you idiots!” is pretty strong, we also know the police would be less than helpful in the face of such ephemeral evidence that is clearly cloaked in terror. But isn’t that always the case? There is also the question of trust—who can Daniel and Laura trust? Who is left to believe them? And then, when the emotional toll of trying to function in a world saturated by all the worst emotions one can face becomes too much, even the relationship that seemed so permanent dashes against relentless horror and suspicion and breaks up.

There are twists and turns throughout, most of them unexpected, most of them avoiding the clich�s a less talented writer would use. There are resolutions of sorts, although not the ones we necessarily looked for, and rough justice meted out. And at the end, at the cessation of terror and all its emotional first cousins, we close the book and look around a bit, you see what might be over there, in that corner, or in the darkness by the door. Good luck getting to sleep…

I had never heard of Mark Edwards before, and found Follow You Home quite by accident. I’m hard to please too, because so many books billed as thrillers produce not so much as a single goose bump. This one raised a whole battalion of goosebumps. And I downloaded The Magpies yesterday, knowing the danger. Finished that one at four this morning. Go figure.

STUPID!

I got this as it was free on my Kindle. I had hope for this book in the very beginning....but it got more unbelievable, silly and predictable as I read on. I even kept reading until near the end...thinking it would have a fantastic twist or something to support the good reviews. NOT. Waste of time. Couldn't even read to the very end...as I lost all hope!
I like well written books. Maybe it is because I had just finished The Light We Can Not See which won the Pulitzer Prize...but maybe not! I give it one star as it made me read a good bit of it...but was just too stupid to finish. Free does not mean good!

Part II (chapters 6-13) provides full coverage of standard graduate level probability theory. It starts with Kolmogorov's probability model and Kolmogorov's existence theorem. It ends with conditional expectations and conditional probability, and an introduction to the theory of discrete time martingales. Krishna B. Athreya is a professor at the departments of mathematics and statistics and a Distinguished Professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Iowa State University. He has been a faculty member at University of Wisconsin, Madison; Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Cornell University; and has held visiting appointments in Scandinavia and Australia. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics USA; a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; an elected member of the International Statistical Institute; and serves on the editorial board of several journals in probability and statistics. Soumendra N. Lahiri is a professor at the department of statistics at the Iowa State University. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.

Many examples and review questions, poor binding.

This text is used for a course I am currently taking, and reflects a 2-3 semester sequence at the school where it is used. As a result each chapter is full of many questions of varying difficulty that help students learn, and each chapter contains a variety of examples that break up the traditional theorem-proof structure of some of the other measure and probability theory texts I've looked at.

My main gripe is that for a few people in my course the binding came off along the interior edge.

Graduate Measure Theory with Statistical Applications

This is an excellent graduate level book on Measure and Probability Theory! The book to me seems student friendly! Of course measure theory is not an easy subject and you will never find an easy book on the subject. Some how I find myself flipping through the pages of this book many times during my times of boredom. I don't know how to do all the problems in the book, but I would love to learn how to. This book is one of the best books in my eyes on Advanced Probability. I recommend it to any professor to use for their courses in measure theoretic probability.

Very well written. The intuition about measure and integration is noted at first. I'm not a mathematician and this book makes a good job as a introduction to the field and probability theory. With respect to the quality of the material I have a complaint. Poor quality and not worth $81.25.
Anyway, I recomend this book except for material that is very poor.

IPO's ...Business Acquisitions....At first you might think that you downloaded the wrong book. But don't despair. This is a great Female Domination Novel, even hard core at times, which also tells a great story. The author does a First Class Job of weaving an exciting plot, and giving the reader a big dose of FemDom oriented BDSM.

Long a fan of Ms Love's writing, this may be her finest. Excellent characters who are well drawn and hold your interest. I would hope that in time she will revisit these characters. It is so rare that an author of this genre paints with understanding the mind of the submissive.
