About the Author
Lucinda was born in Edinburgh and spent her childhood in rural East Lothian, where she spent much of her time roaming the beaches and woods, watching deer, pheasants, geese and rabbits, and listening to the bark of the seals float down the Firth of Forth on the evening breeze. It was then that her lifelong passions for animals - from earwigs to elephants - history, reading and drawing began. She spent years daydreaming about the Roman legions, medieval knights and the American west. Rather than write about the dreams and stories in her head, she drew them purely from her imagination. She is hopeless at drawing anything real in front of her. When she was eleven she was introduced to The Lord of the Rings which combined her own passions for history, legend and fantasy. Still her favourite book, she was thrilled with Peter Jackson's recent Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. After reading history at university she went on to pursue a busy and diverse career in many different companies and organisations, ranging from the Argus Newspaper Group in Cape Town, to the Scottish Post Office, and Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities. After marrying Paul in 1999, Lucinda was able to return to those childhood passions, and very soon their house in Lasswade filled up with ever more rescued animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and ex-battery hens), books, and pastel and watercolour drawings and illustrations covered in dirty paw marks - the cats do always like to help out! This led to Paul's suggestion that she should try putting pen to paper - or rather, given Lucinda's chaotic writing style, get a laptop and start writing. The result was a rapid explosion of ideas and the start of The Dragonsdome Chronicles. It should be no surprise, then, that the characters at the heart of Dragon Lords Rising and the earlier books in the series - apart from sorcerers, gnomes and dwarfs - are in fact dragons; dragons with their own language and character, from the teasing Chasing the Stars to those with serious attitude like the battledragon Two Gulps & You're Gone. The dragons owe the inspiration for their names to Native American culture, and their characters draw on some of the family pets.

Story to grasp a child's imagination

Every so often you want to become immersed in a fantasy story, to enter that world and care about what happens to the characters. You certainly get this in the Dragonsdome series. Gritty heroine, small hero-in-the-making - characters with whom a young(ish) child can identify feel empathy with - and of course, evil villains to arouse a child's keen sense of injustice.
A wonderful new look at dragons as large creatures with minds of their own.
I'm not going to spoil the plot - please buy the book and read it - then read it out to any child within hearing distance. Better still, go out and buy the first two books and there's a brand new book 4 just out. Enjoy!

Roseanne Greenfield Thong was born in California, but lived abroad for 18 years (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Guatemala and Mexico). Carles Ballesteros was born near Barcelona, Spain. He now lives in Chile, where he teaches art classes and illustrates picture books and greeting cards.

Already a treasured part of my home library

I first experienced Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever last year. I left impressed with the love, tenderness and humor with which people reflected on their loved ones passed. I've been looking forward to experiencing the holiday--in this small way--again this year.

I was thrilled when I saw this book at the bookstore a couple weeks ago. I bought it after reading one page, thinking I'd be happy to share it with my kids if it were reasonably thoughtful and entertaining. I'd like my kids to know a little more about the holiday and see how it fits into life throughout the year; finding something geared more toward them thrilled me, whether it was a mediocre read or a purely delightful one!

It was nowhere near a mediocre read. I loved it on my first read, and more on my second. I love how it explains the holiday so accessibly, and with such beautiful pictures. My toddler, who ignores most books (favoring reading the same four over and over), was captivated by the lovely illustrations. I've read this book to my kids every day since we brought it home, and plan on continuing to read it. It's so loving, so affirming, in its explanation, and concludes so sweetly I can't help but smile. This was all the more so when my older child (almost six) asked me what it meant, opening up a lovely discussion.

I've only had this book for two weeks, but I imagine I'll feel every bit as enamored of it in a year, two years, or ten.

Unique art and catchy rhymes

A catchy rhyme interspersed with Spanish words teaches children about the Dia de Los Muertos and its traditions. I can quite easily see little ones wanting this read repeatedly, since the rhythm of the verse is so catchy. The artwork is simple almost entirely flat shapes and colors, but there are so many tiny details that you'll forget that everything is so simplistic. It's a nice style, which I haven't seen in any Spanish-language children's books as of yet.

The only complaint I have about this book is that some of the Spanish vocabulary isn't immediately obvious. Yes, there's a glossary of Spanish terms at the end, but you won't want to leaf back and forth while reading, and kids are unlikely to want to read just a glossary after the rest of the book. So I'd say look up the terms before reading this to your kids so you can explain the few words which they might not understand.

Don't feel the need to run out and buy this without trying it from your local library, first, but feel free to give it a shot!

About the Author

Chris Nunn is a psychiatrist who researched mind/body relationships and bipolar disorder. He has been involved in the 'consciousness studies' movement since 1992.

Nice, but strange,

This little book is about consciousness, and it starts of well, as most do. You get some basic neuroscience, the exlplanation of some theories and experiments, and all is well. Nunn, however, divides the candidates for explaining consciousness in two (he shuns dualism). Theres the neural theories and the quantum theories. He holds that the latter are on the right track, and for most of the book discusses the implications of this.
Nunn then agrees with penrose, the quantum can explain consciousness, by some sort of wave collapse or bose-condensates. This is all well, and very interesting. But Nunn holds that the evidence weights in favour of this claim, which I think is strange. You see, the evidence he shows are these : EEG correlations, EEG measuring effects on task performance, and psi experiments. Now, put this against 40 years of neuroscience research on attention, memory, perception, consciousness, and you do not balance the scale. Did I mention psi and EEG correlation experiments are all controversial, to say the least?
Nunn argues that quantum theories explain more, but this is questionable. The only things at which quantum theories have a better shot, are questinable themselves. Telepathy, panpsichism, TM, etc. Nunn holds that he does not favour quantum theories because it allows one to keep some good old fashioned dualistic points of view, but constantly comments that quantum explanations of consicousness are prettier, and stretch the immagination, and allow one to keep folk psychological concepts, ......you get the point. IN truth, anything in this book is explainable by quantum and by neural theories of consciousness. The problem is that one has to give an explanation of why quantum has to be relevant to brain function, whereas this is not necessary with neural theories. Nunn does not give this explanation, (others have tried, like Hameroff).

A Useful Exegetical Study

This slim book is an MTh thesis completed at Oak Hill College under the supervision of Acts scholar, Matthew Sleeman. It is within this thesis that a pastor, Martin Salter, attempts to answer a current debate with an exegetical study of a pericope in Acts.

One does not often run across a published MTh thesis, so the first question one must ask is what contribution does this monograph make to the current debate? First, what is the debate? Salter engages the debate concerning the charismatic use of spiritual gifts, noting that "the book of Acts is often cited" in this debate, primarily according to Salter, Acts 2:17-21. According to Salter, on one side of the debate stand the scholars that argue for the continuation of these gifts (notably, Michael Green and Craig Keener), and standing opposed are the "conservative scholars" that hold the stance that such gifts were revelatory in function "at a particular point in redemptive history and should not, therefore, be considered normative" (including: John MacArthur, John Stott, and O. Palmer Robertson). Following, John MacArthur, Salter, understands the quotation of Joel 3:1-5 (LXX) in Acts 2:17-21 as the "crux interpretum." Of course, the designation of Acts 2:17-21 as the "crux interpretum" is debatable. It could be that in Acts this passage is the "crux interpretum," but other passages such as 1 Corinthians 12-14 come to mind as other common passages from which "Pentecostals and charismatics develop their theology." But a couple things should be clarified, especially to the American reader first before we carry on assessing Salter's discussion.

First, such terms as "conservative" require more defining, and unfortunately I do not believe I am the one to define them with much clarity. It seems as Salter, a UK pastor, moves through his book terms such as "conservative" bear similar connotations as they do in America, but I would like to be surer. While in the UK for my PhD research, I found that I was often speaking in foreign terms, though still in English, when I used the categories, "liberal," "conservative," or"evangelical."

Second, this book is very timely for Salter's setting in the UK. Again, during my recent research visit to Bristol, UK, I observed as an "outsider" from "the other side of the pond" the resurgence of interest in charismatic gifts. As I spoke with one professor and former vicar in the Church of England I found that at least for the Church of England, which is not Salter's denomination, that there was a type of identity crisis occurring concerning charismatic gifts. Thus the timeliness of a study such as this makes more sense to one in the UK than it may to one in the America, where the debate may appear somewhat stale and pass�, as the dates of the works of Salter's American conversation partners reveal.

Now, to many Salter's method of pursuing his study may seem like he has put the proverbial "cart before the horse" by exploring exegesis before the context and theology this pericope fits within in Luke-Acts. But I think he is right in how he pursues his study, as I will discuss below.

Salter begins his study examining Acts 2:17-21 with very accurate and thorough exegesis. I will not further comment on his exegesis in this review because I found it to be very well done and helpful for his specific concerns in this study. Second, Salter looks at Acts 2:17-21 in the context that is laid before it in Acts 1-2, and third what lies after 2:17-21 in the rest of the Lucan narrative of Acts. In part two one may ask, why does Salter not reach into the third gospel for more Lucan context for such a discussion? I too asked this question in my first cursory glance overt Salter's work, though of course this carries with it the whole debate of unity, which Salter seems to assume. But I was pleased to find when I read Salter's work that he often refers to the Lucan Gospel when discussing "conceptual and Scriptural allusions, and explicit references." His brief comments on Luke 24:27 were especially helpful for his study of allusions and conceptual echoes, especially in the broader debat concerning context, namely "Luke himself encourages the search for fulfillment of OT themes in Luke 24:47." Fourth, Salter moves to the Lucan purpose of the Joel 3:1-5 (LXX) quotation within the overall purpose of the Acts narrative. The theme that governs Acts, and thus his study, is the "restoration of Israel in her new Exodus." I think he is correct, and his exegesis thus far has made this a plausible theme. He thus concludes in this section that Luke's primary use of the quotation of Joel 3 in Peter's Pentecost speech is to give his auditor/reader "certainty" (Lk. 1:4). Fifth, and finally, Salter answers the overall question, "Is [Acts 2:17-21] a paradigm for contemporary ecclesiological or missional praxis, or [is it] a unique unrepeatable event in salvation history?"

Salter's study is very deductive in form, and I believe as I noted above that this is probably the best way of going about such a study. I would call this study "eth-egetical," meaning it is an ethics study, that is, how one should live based upon a solid exegetical foundation. It would seem to be less ecclesiological since it is more concerned with specific application of 'what to do,' and not the marks of the church in the gifts of the Spirit. Thus, I think Salter is correct to go about his study deductively, first looking at the evidence then begin to draw a conclusion of purpose and application to the church. So, this is well done. Unfortunately, in the end, I do not believe Salter's conclusion, his "third-way," will be well received or add something new to the debate. It turns out to be a type of soft-cessationist view, akin to views held by such popular pastors as John Piper or Mark Driscoll. This view sees the Spirit's work as not completely ceased in the ways Acts witnessed to, but possible where the Lord seeks to move significant ways, or in cultures that more often give authority to magic or "see increased amount of demon-possession, or the miraculous." But this does not render this study invaluable. I, first, think that Salter's study is very sobering on the issue. Studying such a live debate through Luke's narrative as narrative, and forgoing simple proof texting, is valuable to reminding the church of what it can still learn from narratives in the bible. And, second, biblical scholars, especially those concerned for the welfare of Christ's church, are in the business of reminding the people of God of what is true, and then what to do. Salter does this well. Not everyone will agree with where he lands, but he does land somewhere (which is a feat of sorts in this debate), and his foundation upon clear and thorough exegesis is strong.

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Review of a teacher (returning to school) and a student (buyer). Relevant to Heads of Department!!

Bad points:

1. Price
2. When this book is used you can't use the Stat Lab a second time. It looks like those guys have FINALLY found a way to get around students using second hand books to save money
3. The fact that you *can* use Stat Lab makes it such that you *do* use it so much that you never really know if you have understood the formulae or learned them by heart.
4. The fact that you do have to learn to use the Stat Lab makes it such that you spend almost as much time learning to use new software as you do new Statistics.
5. The Stat Lab that you can use with this book is only a temporary one. It last for about 6 weeks. Then they want you to pay *another* $90 for access to something that takes so much time to learn. You only find this out when you start getting notifications that "Stat Lab is about to expire."

Good points:

1. The presentation is good and economical. The author does not get into excessive pretty colors.
2. The Stat Lab is nice to use and gives ample problem solving practice.

Verdict (this is directed to heads of department/ chairpersons/ textbook selection committees who are thinking of using this text):

It's a good book, but ultimately, I DON'T recommend it. And this is because you can't use it secondhand, and it's just too expensive. I find no convenient way to purchase StatLab (a second time) for use with this book. It's not like there is so much cutting edge technology in Statistics that you have to pay these prices for it. A $25 book is more than enough for a course in Stats (I am taking this course in the context of Accounting, so I *really* don't need all the gory details). A quick perusal of Amazon.com shows prices in the range of $35-$75 for secondhand books.

Update: This book was going to get 3 stars, but after finding out about the StatLab hoax/ ripoff, it lost the other two stars. ANY book but this one.

Worst stats textbook ever.

This is the most horrible textbook I have ever used for the following reasons: thin pages which tear easily, but you constantly have to cross-reference. Some tables are several pages away in either direction, often impossible to locate - this means a ton of page turning frustration - and rips. Hundreds of questions cross two pages, wherein you have to read the first half of the question and then turn the page to get the rest. (Of course, you also constantly reference the appendices for data-sets, etc.) This means more page turning (and ripping - you can forget trying to resell it unless you've kept it in a glass case). It is very hard to concentrate on working the problems this way. There is a lot of false, made up, and partial "snippet" information, and a lot of "referencing the author" (problems literally reference the author, himself - how obnoxious) which are both extremely annoying and make it hard to concentrate. Also, there are myriad mistakes in the back answer-checking section. This will have you screwed out of finishing your homework because you were trying to get the "right" answer - which might actually be wrong (yes, this happens a lot) if it is found in the back of the book. Most of all, however, this book is awful because of the extremely confusing nature of the writing style. Excess words abound in all of the examples, making it very difficult and confusing to gauge even the most basic concepts. If you are forced to use this book (I don't think any of us actually get a choice) I highly recommend using Youtube to watch instructional videos rather than EVEN LOOKING at the instructional/example sections of this disgusting textbook. It will confuse you before you even know how to approach the problems, then you will have to unlearn what the book spewed so that you can understand concepts. This textbook sets students up to fail.

Excellent Resource- You may want to Buy Loose Leaf with Stat Lab

I had to buy this book for a statistics class I am taking for my masters. Math and statistics overall have not been the strongest courses for me so I was concerned I may have difficulty with the material. The book was very well laid out and there are a series of videos that go along with each section of the book that are offered by Pearson. They are at a separate website.(My Stat Lab which apparently is supposed to be a separately purchased product although my school had the videos available by themselves through Blackboard- So if your school uses Blackboard check with your instructor. This is one thing I loath about Pearson, they charge you 150.00 for a book then want more for stat lab. If you get the e version to begin with through Pearson you only have access to it for so long then it is gone. It also is a pain to read online. I do not recommend using Pearson's online site for the book if you can avoid it, I used it for my economics class and it was a major hassle) If you do want it then I recommend the loose leaf 12th Edition of this book that comes with the stat lab access and ebook which is about another 20-30 dollars. This book is heavy which can make lugging it around a hassle. With the loose leaf at least you can pull the chapters you want to carry around with you more easily.

The hardcover book also comes with a disk that includes stat disk and has all of the tables for the various exercises loaded in the back of the book. (I bought mine new so I don't know if you can be sure you will get it with a used book) I intend on keeping this book for the long term as an excellent resource. Between the stat disk, excel and a decent calculator you can manage all of the formulas and exercises in the book. There are exercises for each section and at the end of each chapter. There are only answers to the odd numbered questions for these exercises in the back of the book. I think there is another booklet with the remaining answers you can buy to give you the even numbered answers but I opted not to buy it at the beginning of the course. (Halfway through the course I am wishing I had so I would have extra questions to practice with).

Excellent book of riddles

For filipinos, this is a must read. The "bugtong" or riddle is now lost art amongst the younger generation among the plethora of gadgets and games that they play.
