OK light reading if you're interested in IT personalities

This book doesn't have any code tricks. It is just a series of interviews with people who have been instrumental in the software and IT industry over the past twenty years with an emphasis on more recent contributors. It mainly goes over how they look at problems and how they solve problems, with a good mix between their approaches to hard and soft skills. If you are a student doing a paper on the history of computing I'd say it would probably give you a pretty good look at some of the personalities involved in computing on which it is difficult to find much written. For example, James Gosling is the father of the Java language, but it is difficult to find any information on his approach to technical problems and his personality in general. This book gives you that kind of insight on Gosling and on other specific personalities that are leaders in the IT field. The final chapter on Weird Al Yankovic is rather strange, since he has nothing to do with the IT field and his intro has his qualifications listed as "The Programmer's Rock Star". I'm not sure how true that is, but it is an amusing chapter.

It's not for everyone, but it is a rare source for this kind of information.

Superficial chats with enterprise programmers

There are, roughly speaking, three worlds of programmers: the enterprise world, the startup world, and the academic world. As its ridiculous subtitle suggests, these interviews are with stars of the enterprise world, where Java and heavyweight IDEs dominate. If you don't use Spring and Eclipse, then most of the chapters will feel irrelevant to you. Personally, I'm a refugee from the Java world moving toward Ruby and Python (the languages that reign supreme in the startup world). The most pertinent interviews were with Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas, the founders of The Pragmatic Progammers. They do fine work; I'd much rather read just about any of their books than this one.

The overproduced design of this book is consistently annoying. Each interview is prefaced by a "Fact Sheet" about the rockstar programmer, with a baseball card-style breakdown of factoids. "Number of kids: Four." Uh, OK. Then the author places interjections throughout the chapter [and not just explanations on square brackets, though there are many of those] but also sidebars like: "Character attribute: Pragmatic, not excessive, optimizer." Ooookay. Why are you interrupting this interview to tell me that? It's as if the author expects me to go build a fantasy baseball team with these programmers. Then the book concludes with a totally superfluous interview with Weird Al Yankovic. Like the rest of the book, that interview doesn't know who its audience is: If you've never heard of Weird Al, it won't make you want to listen to him; and if you're already a fan, you won't learn anything new from it.

But the real problem with this book is the lack of depth. Interviewing programmers in depth without getting mired in too much technical trivia is a big challenge. Masterminds of Programming makes the opposite mistake, producing interviews that are tediously low-level. The one book of interviews with programmers that I'd recommend is Peter Seibel's outstanding Coders at Work. If you really want to know how smart programmers go about solving hard problems, that's the book to read.

great read

I found this book a great read for a variety of reasons. I don't have an IT background but I enjoy reading about groundbreakers and top performers in any field -- hence my interest in the book. The author does a great job of getting at why these folks are RockStars and how they all think about programming and software. But it also does a great job of getting at the issues they face that we all share -- how do I keep up with the deluge of information in my field, how do I stay current with trends and changes in the industry, how do I maintain a work/life balance, etc? And for those with an IT background, there is some very technical information as well. And with the great interview with Weird Al at the end, there is something here for everyone. You'll find value in this book if you don't know COBOL from Ajax, are in CS 101, or are a 20 year industry veteran.

This book presents the latest data on power plants and provides much needed formulas and rules of thumb for sizing equipment based on plant size and arrangement. The book has many examples of equipment and has a good section although somewhat out of date on permitting of power plants. I would recommend it for any power plant engineer especially those just entering the power generation industry.

Amazing book!!! Here is why

When I was in paramedic school, I was having some difficulties with some of the rhythm strips at first, especially in measuring waveform distances, as well as a Mobitz 2 heart block. This book helped me put ECG's together. It starts from the very beginning, such as what the waveforms mean, what distances should be for said waveforms, and finally explanations of each rhythm, where they begin (location wise in the heart) and what they mean. At the end of each chapter, it has a review of the rhythm's you just discussed, by interpreting 10-20 strips. At the end of the book there was 200 some random strips. By the end of cardiology, I could read pretty much any strip that was thrown at me, and I occasionally go back and practice, plus reread some information about some of the ECG's we see in the field and what causes them and how to treat them. This book is great, and I would recommend it to anyone going to school to be a paramedic, RN, PA, RNP, or MD.

I love LOVE this ECG book - great for ICU prep!

I recently graduated from nursing school and have started working in a medical ICU. ECGs are part of the job and I had zero background with this material from nursing school. The hospital has a pretty rigorous course of online modules to study and although they were thorough, at the end I was still left wondering what is the best way to remember these rhythms? Well, that's where this ECG Workout book comes in. There are 3 things that make it a great learning tool and resource: 1)cheat sheets 2)tear out rhythm cards 3)practice strips divided by types of rhythm. Let me elaborate further...

Cheat Sheets - at the end of each rhythm section (ex. atrial arrhythmias) there would be a 1-page summary sheet of the key features to look for in each rhythm. I used these to help me identify the rhythms in the following pages of practice strips.

Rhythm Cards - these are like tear-out flashcards. Ironically I had planned to make some to help me remember the particulars of each rhythm, but this book did it for me! Nice formatting, very thorough.

Practice Strips - anyone who is working to learn ECGs knows that you can learn a rhythm, but none of the practice/test strips look like the "example" model you are shown. What I like in this book is that at the end of each section (atrial arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, junctional arrhythmias...) each chapter has its own collection of 100 practice strips. So you take the 1-page cheat sheet for the section/chapter you are working in, and you know that the rhythms in the practice section will be one of those on the sheet. It takes away all the guessing of if the rhythm might be some other kind and it makes the study much more focused. The answers are easy to find in the back of the book and include all the analysis points of the strip to back up and strengthen your skills.

I used this book for a few days and got a 98% on my unit's ECG test. The only one I missed was because I circled the wrong answer (even though I knew the correct rhythm). Now I feel fairly confident that I can recognize rhythms in all shapes and sizes! This book was truly a significant part in bringing me to that level of understanding.

FYI, there are also the basic intro to strips and wave forms in the book. It is a full-service ECG book - I just didn't cover all of that (I focused on my favorite, most useful parts). After looking at a bunch of other ECG books, this was THE ONE.

Practice, practice

This book is great for practice strips! The only way to learn rhythm interpretation is to practice, practice, practice. This book is loaded with strips (and their answers). The content is OK. I didn't like how the author grouped junctional rhythms and heart blocks in the same section, too confusing for the new practitioner.

Bigger and better

Like the book it follows, this is a book of photographs with only a couple of pages of text. Many sequels do not carry the force of the original, but this one does. This expands the original volume's original scope of surveying the developing revolution in transportation as a grass-roots movement by including new additional projects and manufacturers that one can't but help find intriguing. It is less playful in covering bike culture and contains more studio manufacturers and fewer artists than the original. This is a hard-back. It is physically larger, being 9.5" x 11.25"; a 20% increase in size over the book it follows and has 15 more pages than-- Velo: Bicycle Culture and Design. It lists 135 manufactures in the index; 13 more than the book it follows. All of the makers show-cased are new; none of them are in the earlier book. On the down-side, neither book has a table of contents, probably because the material in this book is too new to fall into distinct groups. Yet it does have chapters: Preface, Boutique Shops, Connisseurs, Urban Bikes, Touring Bikes & Speed Bikes. Both books have an index of websites. It has very little text; the majority of text appears as captions. Many photographs, however, are outstanding and let you have experience without words. It is a photojournalist's diary of a World-wide movement not yet in sharp focus.

I have not always liked all the characters in it

I have been with the Fever series since the beginning, my daughter and I segued into it from the Highlander novels. It has been a hard series to read, I have not always liked all the characters in it, but it has always held my attention. I finally began to like Mac when she inadvertently killed Barrons, and could not put Fevermoon down. I was happy with the end figuring we would hear more after a few Highlander novels, since there were some loose ends that needed to be cleared up. (Still are!)
Then came Iced, I do not think Ms. Moning had second thoughts I think she knew exactly what she was doing…. I hated Dani, I hated her in all the previous Fever books, a smart ass, foul mouthed brat, allowing her to mature in the silvers made sense. Though I still barreled on through Burned and Feverborn…
Now we come to the last book (maybe) and the story is epic. I will have to read it a couple of more times and go back through Feverborn, but I have to say I like it, it works. Some parts are better than others, some surprises, some things I would rather not read. Buckle yourself in and enjoy the ride!

If only never ending...

When a friend handed me the first 4 book in Kmm series years ago I instantly fell madly deeply in love with the whole thing. went back and read the highlander series just so that I could read the faefever series with that knowledge. I reread the series every time a new book came out an discovered new things every time never wanting it to end. I have read and reread an will continue to reread because I see you yi-yi and will never let you go...

Both had a radiator protected by an armored shutter, and a shatter-proof windshield. The M3A1 also carried a front-mounted roller to prevent it from bogging down on muddy ground, and could carry three machine guns (two .30 calibers and one .50) on a hull-mounted skate rail. The M3A1 saw service in the Pacific, North Africa and Europe, with over 3,000 handed to the Soviet Union via lend-lease. While it performed admirably enough in the field the open top design, light armament and poor off-road characteristics led most Army units to replace it with the M8 armored car and M20 utility car by 1944. Originally produced in 1941, this technical manual was standard issue to M3, M3A1, and M2 crews. Originally restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form.

It was okay

This was just okay. I liked that this involved a pretty unique shifter but other than a crazy ex-boyfriend him being rare was never really an issue. This book was more about his inability to believe that people could be genuine friends and want him for him and no other reason. I enjoyed the story but there was just something lacking.

Traditional without being the same old thing

This is a different type of crochet book still with some of the traditional designs, but with some added zing. These designs are all done with attention to detail. These are not just thrown together and are not boring. They are truly artistic works done by top designers. Here are the main contents of the items in the book:

Even the names are works of art! And as you can see, each section has specific tips concerning that particular type of crochet work. Each chapter has a mini-workshop to help the crocheter succeed with each pattern.

The mixing of lace and single crochet struck me as quite different in Cabine de Dentelle. This would be best used as a decorative piece, not for warmth. One piece I particularly like is Van Gogh Waves; it is just gorgeous and lush looking. I love the colors and the wave design does indeed remind me of Van Gogh's art. Also, I usually don't like cables in crochet, but these are better looking than most and used to full advantage in these afghans.

The yarn requirements are clearly stated. They use some sweet yarn, but substitutions would be easy to do. The rest of the pattern is very readable in a good font and each special stitch is explained in detail. All skill levels can use this book, but I would say it's more for intermediate crocheters, rather than for beginners.

This book isn't perfect, but then again sometimes all those 'out there' type crochet books really aren't for the usual person looking for some unusual designs. They can sometimes look a bit too artsy to be practical. I think this book balances the two approaches and I can recommend it to anyone looking for a slightly different approach to the usual afghans.

Designs Are More "Traditional" Than "Unexpected"

In compiling this collection of traditional but thoroughly modern afghans, crochet designer Robin Chachula asked other well-known designers "to use the afghan as a vehicle to showcase their favorite aspect of crochet." The designers responded with afghans using crochet cables, colorwork, lace, granny motifs, and Tunisian crochet.

In purchasing this book, I was hoping for more of the "unexpected". Thus I was somewhat disappointed by the "traditional" look of most of the afghan designs. Two of the most intriguing designs are Vika (Celtic cables and knots) and Bethlehem Star (inspired by the Bethlehem Star quilt pattern). However, Vika's central Celtic knot is accomplished with applied I-cord, and Bethlehem Star's motifs are made from small, individually-crocheted pieces (the rays of the stars) that must be sewn together. Thus I can't see myself making either afghan, although both are quite pretty.

However, you can't go wrong with a pattern collection published by Interweave Press! The crochet instructions are given in both written-out and charted form, and the full-color photographs of the afghans (including closeups showing important details) are beautiful. The individual patterns include quotations from the designers, plus tips for making the particular afghan look its best. For example, the Vika tip explains how to avoid catching your stitches on other stitches when you're working post stitches behind stitches already worked; the Cabine de Dentelle tip explains the importance of blocking the squares by carefully ironing them.

Many of the designers have contributed short motivational "Beginner Tips" in the book's introduction. The cable designs are by Robyn Chachula, Marty Miller, Drew Emborsky, Annie Modesitt, Jill Wright, and Simona Merchant-Dest. The granny motif designs are by Robyn Chachula, Linda Permann, Ellen Gormley, Edie Eckman, Annette Petavy, and Tammy Hildebrand. The colorwork designs are by Robyn Chachula, Kathryn Merrick, Leigh Radford, Carol Ventura, Kimberly McAlindin, and Mary Beth Temple. The lace designs are by Robyn Chachula, Tracie Barrett, Kristin Ohmdahl, Marly Bird, and Doris Chan. The Tunisian crochet designs are by Robyn Chachula, Darla Fanton, Diane Halpern, Dora Ohrenstein, Kim Guzman, and Megan Granholm.

Not for the beginner

I agree with both of the other reviewers that this is quite a special afghan book and will be appreciated by the advanced crocheter looking for something unusual. The first section of cables is for me the most difficult one. I like the Tunisian crochet and the lace and granny sections. The afghans I'd most like to make are the Tunisian crochet sampler by Ohrenstein, Van Gogh waves by Guzman and Starburst entrelac afghan by Granholm. This book doesn't have a lot of information on doing the cable stitches. with all of the regular type afghan books it's good to have one that is definitely original by lots of well known designers working today.
