The First Book-Length Biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is the first book-length biography ever written about F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is only one of three such biographies of Fitzgerald recommended by The F. Scott Fitzgerald Society. It is the only one of the three published by a major private publishing company. The other two of the three were published by state university presses. It is hardbound, published in 1949 and 362 pages long. I bought it used in good condition. Mizener was a professor at Carlton College when the book was published. He writes in a very analytical style that prepares the reader for a punch line or vividly understanding summary statement to follow. His readers are likely to concentrate on the analytical material while repeatedly wondering where the author is going with all these details, only to find a capping statement that is memorable enough to copy down and convincing enough to make them wonder why they were wondering. I was surprised by the importance of football in Fitzgerald's early life and by the shortage of life experience outside of falling for beautiful women, going to parties, hanging out with rich people and getting drunk in his mature life.

I was surprised, delighted and thoroughly engrossed by this older biography of Fitzgerald. The biography skillfully and interestingly intertwines F's works and his life - not the usual dull, 'this happened first, then this, and then that." Really, surprisingly entertaining. Also, I learned much new about Fitzgerald and Zelda which is an accomplishment because I have studies this author for years.

Vivid and Vibrant Portrait of the Man and His Times

This version has been updated by the author, with added material. The original has stood the test of time and been the go to source for readers on Fitzgerald and the changes only make it stronger. The writing itself is conversational and entertaining. The settings are superbly detailed and so vivid that the vignettes come alive. This book not only chronicles a life, it also outlines a lifestyle. What an excellent portrait of the writer and his contemporaries and their times. I highly recommend Arthur Mizener's work.

The 1992 Rio de Janeiro UN Conference on Environment and Development recognized the expediency of an integrated and sustainable use of all coastal resources, functions and services grounded on sound scientific data.
The present volume is based on the 1994 international workshop Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and brings together contributions by leading specialists both on basic concepts and on applications of coastal management. The work is divided into six parts, dealing with the conceptual framework of ICZM; regional and global aspects of coastal management; environmental assessment in ICZM; capacity building and technology transfer; monitoring and environmental analysis; and case studies and status of ICZM plans. The book also incorporates an interactive ICZM planning module, COSMO, which can be of use in designing a management plan for a coast. Attention is also given to long-term environmental effects of present-day actions. It is hoped that COSMO will prove an additional learning tool for ICZM practitioners and enhance the value of the book.
This work is intended to give a broad coverage of conceptual and technical aspects of ICZM, and will be of use to operational executives as well as students of ICZM, environmental economists, policy-makers and senior managers in the international development agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations. It can be recommended as a textbook and as a reference work.

About the Author
W. Bruce Allen (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. For many years he was the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. He is an internationally recognized expert in transportation economics, and he specializes in demand theory and logistics. In addition to his duties at Wharton, Professor Allen teaches each summer in India and consults for numerous companies domestically and abroad. He has won a number of teaching awards, including the coveted Anvil Award, the highest teaching honor at Wharton since it is voted on by the students.

Keith Weigelt (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is the Rebecca and Morris Marks Professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in business strategy, game theory, and tournaments, with articles published in the following leading journals: Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Business, and Management Science. Professor Weigelt has won numerous teaching awards, most recently the Undergraduate Division Excellence in Teaching Award and the “Tough, but I will thank you in 5 years” Award.

Neil A. Doherty (Ph.D. Cranfield Institute) is the Frederick H. Ecker Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1979, when Sino-American scientific agreements were finally reached, Mansfield was the first American economist to lecture in the People's Republic of China.

Great theoretical presentation, practical application presentation needs work, not for the mathematically impaired

If you're reading this review, I'm going to assume that you're either one of the authors or someone like me who had to get this book for your managerial economics class. As you can probably see, there are a lot of fairly negative reviews for this book. I think this book gets a bad rap because of the way in which it is written, which is more like a mathematics or statistics text. They present abstract concepts in mathematical terms in a way that resembles the proof of a theorem. Personally, I didn't have a problem with that. In fact, I really liked that because through their presentation, they put some pretty abstract concepts into quantifiable terms. I don't own a lot of managerial economics textbooks, but I can't imagine anyone doing a better job of mathematically presenting said concepts. What I didn't like about this book was the fact that it didn't offer much in the way of practical knowledge or application. As an example, the authors discussed utility functions, production functions, and cost functions at length and then provided a "Quant Option" with the appropriate equations for those who are not mathematically impaired. The authors never adequately explained how a manager would go about developing those functions in the first place. If they were to explain how to develop those functions and if they were to add more practical material to complement their excellent treatment of the theoretical material, I would give it 5 stars.

Too wordy, not enough depth

First I will admit to not reading the entire book, just the chapters required for a managerial economics class I was taking.

That aside this is one of the least informative books I've used in my academic or professional career. The main issues I have with the book is it is a very topical read (i.e. pointlessly wordy) with very little depth and like a lot of academic reads it really does not focus on application. (You'd think a book with Managerial in the title would focus 80% of its effort on application.)
The end result is a book that seems to make fairly simple topics sound complex and difficult while minimizing the complexity of more difficult subjects all the while not helping to improve your ability to make economic managerial decisions.

There must be better options out there....

I honestly believe that this one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to try to learn from. The explanations are not clear at all and I was hoping for much more real life situations and things that can bring the equations to life. I would not recommend this to anyone who has a choice. I had to buy it for a class requirement. There has to be something better out there. Thank goodness I was able to buy this one used. Try to do the same if you must buy this for a course!

12 Steps in Christian-ese

Father Rohr takes AA's 12 steps & puts a Christian spin on them (adding Jesus' teachings to the mix..) As a long-time fan of Father Rohr, a Franciscan priest, this is one of my favorite sets. Totally real, and REALLY helpful (even if you're not recovering from substance abuse, this definitey is a Faith-strengthen-er!) Must confess that some of Father Rohr's other stuff is WAY over my head, but these practical recordings walk through the recovery process step by step. Especially like his take on mercy. Not just words, it's an attitude -- as folks in AA humbly stand and say "I'm an alcoholic".. the church can learn to be humble like that -- Lord have Mercy. REAL mercy. We sure need it! These CDs are from the 80s (some references a bit dated); but insights still very relevant. (Thought Father Rohr did a conference a few yrs ago.. there may be an updated version.)

Been there-Done that

Words just will not convey the way this book touched me. Small wonder though, as the author hits the spot on so many of the areas of despair I went through as I journeyed from the depth of addiction to an area of appreciation of life again. Thank you Father Rohr for once again allowing me to learn that I'm not that different from other sufferers from this scourge of addiction. In my recovery I have been introduced to that fact again and again. No matter the profession or education level the fellow sufferers I have become acquainted with are affected in much the same ways. A lot of that understanding I think comes from listening to each ones stories and this book once again verifies this fact and allows me to be accepting of my fellow human beings.

Spirituality and the Twelve Steps

This review refers to the paperback book published in 2011
Richard Rohr joined the Franciscans in 1961 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970, the same year he earned a master's degree in theology. In 1971 he founded the New Jerusalem Community in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1987 he established the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he serves as founding director, dividing his time between local work and preaching and teaching around the world. The center is designed as a place of discernment and growth for activists and those interested in social service ministries.

Rohr is best known for his audio and video tapes, CDs, books, and articles. His themes include Scripture as liberation, integration of action and contemplation, community building, peace and justice, and eco-spirituality. His latest work, Breathing Under Water, is based on a series of talks Rohr gave 25 years ago connecting the Gospel to the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. He begins with two connections: (1) what we now label "addiction" can be compared to what the bible called "sin" (2) sin, like addiction, may be viewed as a disease rather than something that is punishable and displeasing to God. He expands the commonly held idea of addiction to something broader and also hidden. He suggests that individuals today are addicted to our own way of doing things, our own defenses, and our own way of thinking and processing reality.

The book is formatted in twelve chapters, corresponding to the AA steps. Each chapter opens with the text of the step being addressed and relevant quotations from Scripture. Rohr often holds up elements in established religion, yes, Catholic too, that seem not to contribute to the necessary healing. At the same time, he does not condemn those practices, but suggests ways in which they might be altered to comply more fully with the healing message of Jesus.

Looking for honesty in a cesspool financial system

I have the opinion that James Altucher is honest and intelligent. He has been burnt like many of us. He knows the system is so rigged that an ordinary investor has a minute chance against the PhD mathematics, computers, inside information, derivatives, short selling, options, etc, etc of the greedy elite. James tries to tackfully steer us to solid companies that still derive thier value from solid business principal of growth and dividend yield. I think the book is a great read to try to get your mind clear and refocused if necessary to reality. James is trying to help the average person and he is not trying to fill his own pockets at your expense. Refreshing and ethical.

leaves more to be desired

This is a good book and i respect James efforts to steers us towards respectable companies.
However, as a standalone book it leaves much more to be desired. The students of trading need to revisit the writings of Toby Crabel and Linda Raschke in order to learn from real traders and hedge fund managers. These could be found here or on Ebay. From what i understand James does not trade full time.

Interesting premise, poor execution

The premise of the book is quite interesting---what are fundamental trends with significant tail wind? And, indeed, the author throws out some interesting ideas, like varicose vein treatments in response to obesity problems. That said, the book is horribly written---the author has about 20 pages of interesting content interspersed with 200 pages of random digressions, about his love of computer games and the longest words in the English language.
