BarCharts are a great - but condensed - overview of the black letter law.

What BarCharts are NOT: a comprehensive study guide. You cannot do well on a law school exam or bar exam relying solely upon BarCharts. That is not their purpose.

What BarCharts ARE: a condensed overview of the black letter law. Use them as a quick reference to understand the material during the semester. Use them as a REVIEW of the material you (should) have already studied for the exam.

In law school, BarCharts were the last thing I skimmed over before taking an exam. It's a good refresher.

Same with the bar exam. I skimmed over my BarCharts both nights before the exam.

What these laminates do better than nearly any other resource is to give you a general overview and guide so you can understand where the material is going. Similar to the artist's technique where you have to create a vague rough sketch to understand proportion and relevance, these allow you to understand the significance of minutia and detail in the bigger schematic. Also great refresher if you are return after a long time away and your own notes don't make sense anymore.

The Bad:

These cannot replace the actual text or class material, though of the entire series Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure and Criminal Procedure come closest. Also, some of the case references are outdated. In particular, they do not have the 2007 amendments to FRCP which have been in effect for some time now.

The Ugly:
For those gunners out there, the laminate surface also makes these perfect to buy a second set to keep in the can for those "first thing in the morning" study sessions.

This was better than any other supplement I had.

I bought two huge supplemental textbooks, won a supplement via a Lexis raffle, and hauled around two of the commercial outlines that Bar prep programs give away. Ultimately, it came down to this bad boy. Because of this product, my highest exam grade was in Civ Pro. Trust me, I thought I was on my way to getting a D in that course. Definitely buy!

About the Author

HIROMI HAYASHI was born in Japan in 1963. Just then, she encountered a book called Origami Kyoushitu-Hana -meaning paper-folding classroom for flowers-written by Dokuotei Nakamura, and was fascinated by the art of turning origami paper into flowers. She has been creating various flowers in her own style ever since, and now resides east of Tokyo, in Chiba City.

Nicely diagrammed flower folds with pretty results

I am a long-time origami fan, though my skills are only intermediate. I had no problem with any of the diagrams in this book, but I would guess that it might be a bit intimidating to a beginner. The absolute beginner who is not familiar with origami diagrams might want to start with a "easy origami" book first which shows the standard fold symbols with step by step instructions. Still, the standard folding symbols are not hard to learn, and there are no complex folds in this book, so a beginner could probably figure it out from this book with some patience. It could use a bit more detail on assembling the flowers. There are lots of good closeup pictures of the finished flowers, and you can figure it out from those, but a walk through on the first flower of how it is done would have been nice.
The flowers are very detailed and nice looking when completed, and they are diagrammed clearly. I found no errors in the diagrams.

Beautiful results, if you can find out how to get there

If you are fairly skilled at paper folding, then you'll probably enjoy the problem solving this book presents. The full color pictures at the beginning of the book are beautiful and detailed (which often helps when trying to figure out what the end product should look like).

However, This book is not for beginners. Page 33 may have definitions of Origami Symbols, but the page by page instructions are incomplete.

For example, the Dahlia on page 77. There are a couple missing steps between 10 and 11. To find the shape you want, the best example I can direct you to is the page 33 directions, row 4 where it says "Push inside and flatten." That's basically what you are doing to acheive the shape in step number 11.

Also, the page 34 "Basic Hexagon" instructions haven't worked very well for me. I went on line to a German origami site and found better instructions... even though I don't speak German.

All in all I am enjoying the book, and am not disappointed that I purchased it. It just gets frustrating on occasion, and I'm glad that I know enough about paper folding to be able to figure these things out.

He has several excellent and well-explained real life examples of how real people have been shaped to further simplify his excellent points.
These examples remind me of how Dale Carnegie wrote about people in different situation and how that affected them.
The book is also filled with useful hints (gems) one can use in real life.
After reading this book I got a new way to look at criticism making it possible to use twice as much feedback!

A sometimes interesting book on the philosophical aspects of practicing Tai Chi.

My lifetime passion for anything to do with the martial arts and self-defense has also led me to study Tai Chi long enough to earn my instructor's certificate many years ago. In fact, I still teach a seated version of Tai Chi I developed for seniors who have trouble doing standing exercises. I teach this class twice a week. I have read numerous books over the years on the topic of Tai Chi and its true meaning. However, even though this volume (Embrace tiger, Return to the mountain: The Essence of Tai Ji) was sometimes interesting, I did not find it an enjoyable read. In fact, it was many times boring and I struggled to finish it because I NEVER write a review without reading the entire book. The text does attempt to explore various philosophical issues such as Zen, Taioism and other spiritural and mystical topics relating it to the practice of Tai Chi (or Tai Ji as the author spells it).

This 188 page book is organized into nine chapters. It also has a foreword and an introduction page. The first five chapters cover the various mystical aspects of practicing Tai Chi. It includes numerous Asian philosophical topics like Zen, Taioism and other spiritural topics. The 6th chapter provides a short overview of calligraphy, which I found interesing. The 7th chapter explores the meaning of the Zen Ox Pictures. The 8th chapter explains Tao Te Ching. The final chapter the author relates some of his experiences and stories. The remander of the book has various black and white pictures of the author with other people.

In conclusion, for those who are really into the philosophical aspects of Tai Chi, you may find this book of some interest and even gain some insight that you did not know previously. I can only give this book a fair rating at best.

Very good book but not for beginners

I am only beginning to explore the essence of Tai Ji and this book caught my interest because of its title. Also, other reviewers indicated that the book is worth reading. In my opinion, the book is not for the beginners. One should be familiar with the basic principles of Tai Ji in order to follow it and understand the form of Tai Ji the author is teaching. This book does not disect the teaching in an attempt to explain it. It is an experience that comes from knowledge. I will definitely keep and it return to it when I have studied the philosophy and am prepared to experience it.

In this revised and expanded edition of their established text, Stephen Mulhall and Adam Swift provide an up-to-date overview of the issues and new developments in the debate. Beginning with an account of John Rawls's A Theory of Justice, the book goes on to provide clear presentation of the work of the main communitarians - Michael Sandel, Alisdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor and Michael Walzer. This is followed by a substantially rewritten and expanded assessment of Rawls's more recent work, as that is presented in his new book, Political Liberalism. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which his position enables him to respond to the communitarian critique. The final part of the book examines the writings of three other liberal theorists whose work bears on these issues; the work of Ronald Dworkin is included here for the first time, together with that of Richard Rorty and Joseph Raz. This provides a framework for investigating the different ways in which liberal political thought can claim to be neutral between conceptions of the good.

Interesting Detailed Analysis

This is a scholarly examination of the communitarian challenge to liberal political philosophy. The authors start with John Rawls' positions in A Theory of Justice as a canonical starting point. They sketch out a number of themes; the conception of the person, asocial individualism, universalism, subjectivism or objectivism, and anti-perfectionism vs neutrality that they judge recur in the communitarian critiques. This section is followed by discussions of four strains of communitarian thought - Michael Sandel, Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, and Michael Walzer. These sections are quite well done; good summaries of the works of these individuals with discussions of how their work (explicitly in the case of Sandel and Walzer, implicitly in the case of MacIntyre and Taylor) stands as a critique of Rawls and contemporary strains of liberalism. There is a detailed analysis of Rawls' Political Liberalism, construed here as partly a response to the communitarian critique, again using the identified themes. The authors conclude with 3 chapters looking at alternative liberal political visions, those of Richard Rorty, Ronald Dworkin, and Jonathan Raz.

The strengths of the book are the careful analysis and what seems to be fair analysis of all the figures treated in the book. The authors try hard to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of all arguments. They generally feel that liberal political thinkers, particularly Rawls, do well in meeting most of the communitarian critique though they feel that state neutrality is a chink in the liberal theorists' armor.

There are some defects. The principal one is what might be called the Rawlsian writing style. In an effort to be very specific and careful in their analysis, the authors have produce a lot of fairly labored prose. I think a lot of the authors' thinking could have been presented in a more clear and direct style. The authors omit an important fact about the most impressive communitarian thinkers - MacIntyre and Taylor. Both are Roman Catholic theists and this is responsible, at least partly, for their fairly teleological views. While the authors conclude with some paragraphs about the potential weaknesses of liberal positions, more than anything, they leave one with an impression of the power of liberal theory, particularly Rawls' theories.

It's Father's Day weekend-a tough time for Charlie D, host of a late-night radio call-in show that offers supportive advice to troubled listeners. My least favorite of the three storylines, the mystery is still engaging and fast paced, but I found the ending was anti-climactic and a bit disappointing. Charlie is again hosting an hour show, this time it is for Father’s Day. As these stories tend to work with a theme, today we are dealing with the father-son relationship.

Charlie’s own relationship with his father is fractured, and his own personal insights into the topic are slowly coming forward, until he gets an email with a specific plan: the author is planning to kill his family, and Charlie and Nova need to do what they can to get help and stop the event.

Daniel Mat� again manages to infuse the tension and emotion that highlight the host’s thoughts as he works to relate to the troubled listeners. As always, he makes some good and some not so great decisions on his way to sorting out the problem: but the intentions from Charlie are always to help. This does go a long way to not finding him removed and difficult, as he so often claims to be.

With a race to the solution and resolution, this story proceeds quickly with little to no respite in the action- readers have to read / listen on – because you are invested. Perhaps in the actual storyline, or just in Charlie – but the desire to know what happens next is there. While it wasn’t my favorite that was simply the topic: I was as determined to know if the murders were stopped before they could happen.

The Shadow Killer - Gail Bowen is a Solid Short Story Writer!

I must say that this was probably my least favorite of all of the Charlie D short stories, but even though it was my least favorite, it still didn't make me dislike it. I think that each story has helped develop Charlie's character.

Gail Bowen seems to have a knack for writing short stories! I have said it before and I will probably say it at least one more time, but she has mastered the length of story for a short story! Too often, short stories are either way too short and don't divulge enough, or they are way too long and divulge way too much, but she seems to have the perfect recipe!

I was able to quickly listen to this and move on to finish the series with the easy listening from the narrator, Daniel Mat�! His voice has left a lasting impression on me and even though I read these a couple months ago, I can still hear his voice ringing through, clear as day!!

Overall, it was a quick easy read and I didn't mind finishing at all!
